LAKE EUFAULA HISTORY: THE LEGEND OF BELLE STARR

Did you know one of the most legendary figures of the Old West called the Lake Eufaula area home?

Known as the “Bandit Queen,” Belle Starr became one of the most famous—and mysterious—names associated with Indian Territory. In the 1880s, Belle lived near the Canadian River in what is now the Lake Eufaula region at a place known as Younger's Bend.

Her life was filled with colorful characters, outlaws, controversy and stories that have been passed down for generations. Belle Starr was killed in 1889, and her grave remains near the lake today—a lasting connection between the Old West and the history surrounding Lake Eufaula.

Her name also lives on at Belle Starr Campground, where visitors can enjoy camping, boating, fishing and beautiful views of the lake.

Lake Eufaula is more than a place to spend a summer weekend. Our shores are filled with Oklahoma history, legends and stories waiting to be discovered.
