IS LAKE PEPIN REALLY A LAKE?
Yes — but it is also part of the Mississippi River.
Lake Pepin is a naturally widened section of the Mississippi, stretching for roughly 22 miles between Wisconsin and Minnesota. It formed as sediment carried by the Chippewa River accumulated where the rivers meet. That immense natural delta partially dammed the Mississippi, causing the water upstream to widen into Lake Pepin.
So when you watch a sailboat cross Lake Pepin — or see a towboat and barges moving through — you are still watching the Mississippi River flow toward the Gulf of Mexico.
It is a lake, a river and one of the defining features of the Pepin Valley.
Have you viewed Lake Pepin from both sides of the river?
