Long before Patrick County was established, Eliphaz Shelton helped shape the history of this region. A Revolutionary War-era pioneer, Shelton was among the first permanent settlers in the mountains of southwestern Virginia, establishing a homestead along the Dan River that became a cornerstone of early frontier life.

The Shelton family's influence extended far beyond those early years. In fact, they donated the land where the Patrick County Courthouse stands today, leaving a legacy that remains at the heart of our community more than two centuries later. Their story is woven into the very foundation of Patrick County.

As part of Patrick County's VA250 Celebration, join local historian Beverly Woody for a fascinating look at the history of one of the county's founding families and the lasting impact they had on the place we call home.
