🐠 Your first breath underwater is unlike anything else. SSI Open Water Diver gets you there — academics you finish at your own pace, confined-water pool practice, then open-water training dives on the reef at Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary. 🌊

No experience required. If you can swim and you're curious what's under the surface here in the Lower Keys, you can start this course. 🤿

💡 DID YOU KNOW?
🏝️ Sombrero Key Light has warned ships off a shallow reef south of Marathon since it was first lit on March 17, 1858. At 142 feet, it is the tallest of the six historic Florida Reef Lights, engineered by Lieutenant George Meade, who later commanded Union troops at Gettysburg. The skeletal iron tower still stands as an active Coast Guard aid to navigation.

State scientists have surveyed the same fixed reef stations here every year since 1996, filming the bottom and counting live coral species to track what's thriving and what's dying. Three decades of hurricanes, bleaching events, and disease outbreaks are all logged in that one unbroken dataset.

The last week of October still has good room openings on Ramrod Key. Look at Monday to Thursday, Oct 26–29, and Saturday, Oct 31. 🗓️

🌊 Stay canal-side at MM 27.5. The Half Day Snorkel & Dive Reef Trip leaves from the resort for Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary. Guests may spot turtles, nurse sharks, moray eels and plenty of Caribbean reef fish. 🐢

Morning trips check in at 8:00 AM. Afternoon trips check in at 12:30 PM.

Five days of new features, documentaries, and filmmaker Q&As under one of the last great single-screen theaters left in the Keys -- plus a Golden Key Award ceremony and a full slate of shorts programs.

Looe Key Reef Resort is a laid-back Ramrod Key basecamp about an hour up the highway from Key West; we're not the festival host, so plan your own ride into town for screenings.

⚓ Before electronic navigation, Florida Keys reef beacons worked like a visual positioning system. The first markers used mangrove posts topped with black barrels. Sailors could spot them from 2 to 3 miles away, or as far as 6 miles through a spyglass, and match their positions to a chart.
