According to an interview by Ed Gore in a July 13, 2014 Star News Article -
"In 1958, Mannon Gore started selling lots at cut rates, even for those times – $1,000 for waterfront and $250 to $400 for interior sites – to get enough homes built to persuade the state to take over the roads and bridge."
With these bargain prices, construction commenced in earnest. Once there were 50 homes on the island the NC DOT would take over operation of the Sunset Beach Bridge.
