Tucked beneath the towering trees along Main Street in Sycamore sits a home that has spent more than a century doing exactly what it was built to do — bringing people together.
For more than 125 years, The Paper Doll House has been filled with laughter, friendship, creativity, celebrations, and unforgettable memories. From elegant Victorian gatherings in the 1890s to the crafting retreats and late-night conversations shared around the tables today, this beautiful home has always been a place where people gather, connect, and create lasting memories.
Located at 331 N. Main Street, the home was built in 1892–1893 by prominent local resident Charles O. Boynton as a bridal gift for his daughter as she married into another well-known Sycamore family. From its earliest days, the house stood as a symbol of love, hospitality, and celebration.
Designed in the stunning Queen Anne style, the home featured grand entertaining spaces, six ornate fireplaces, richly detailed craftsmanship, maid’s quarters, and rooms each with their own unique personality and charm. Long before Main Street became the heart of Sycamore’s historic district, it began as a Potawatomi trail traveled generations ago. Over time, the neighborhood grew into one of the most treasured collections of Victorian architecture in Illinois, with this remarkable home becoming one of its shining landmarks.
Life has unfolded beautifully within these walls for generations. Elegant parties once filled the parlors with music and dancing. Families celebrated weddings, holidays, and milestones here. Stories were shared over meals, friendships formed beside glowing fireplaces, and memories created in every corner of the home. Even during the years the mansion housed a prominent advertising agency, the tradition of lavish entertaining and warm hospitality continued.
Then, nearly twenty years ago, the home entered a new chapter — one perfectly suited to its history.
The Paper Doll House became a creative retreat and gathering place where women from all over could come together to scrapbook, craft, laugh, relax, and create lifelong friendships. What began as a historic home built for entertaining naturally transformed into a beloved retreat centered around creativity, comfort, and community.
Today, the spirit of the house feels much the same as it always has.
Most weekends each month, guests arrive carrying crafting totes and overnight bags, ready for a weekend unlike any other. Some come alone and leave with lifelong friends. Others gather their favorite people and reserve the entire house for themselves. The home welcomes up to 12 guests at a time, surrounding them in Victorian splendor, cozy comfort, and heartfelt hospitality.
Creativity fills every room. Guests enjoy unlimited use of die cut systems with hundreds of dies, punches, scissors, templates, idea books, Wi-Fi, music, streaming television, and beautiful spaces designed for inspiration. The six guest rooms are warm and inviting, dressed in plush linens and filled with antiques, thoughtful details, and little surprises that make every stay feel special.
And just as it did generations ago, the house continues to gather people around the table.
Homemade breakfasts, lunches, dinners, decadent desserts, and the beloved daily 4:00 p.m. teatime create moments of connection that guests remember long after they leave. Laughter echoes through the halls late into the evening. New friendships are stitched together between projects and cups of tea. Stories are shared, traditions are created, and the house quietly adds another chapter to its long history.
🪄That is the magic of The Paper Doll House. 🪄
It is more than a retreat center. More than a historic home. It is a place where the past and present gently meet — where over a century of celebrations, creativity, friendship, and love still linger in every room.
What began as a bridal gift in historic Sycamore has become a place where lifelong friendships are made and memories continue to grow with every guest who walks through the doors.
