This historic three-story building is being transformed into a 28-unit apartment community featuring six one-bedroom and 22 two-bedroom units. CPC (Community Preservation Corporation) is also committing permanent financing. The project includes a $140,000 grant through the Onondaga County Housing Initiative Program, supporting private housing development across Onondaga County.

Originally built in 1907 and closed in 1964, the Taft School was purchased by Skinner Properties in 2023 from American Legion Post 1276 and is now entering its next chapter.

What was once the American Legion bar is revealing even more history. With the drop ceiling removed, the original tin ceilings from the building’s schoolhouse days are back in view—soon to be part of a new storage space for tenants. Stay tuned as more layers are uncovered.

One of our favorite parts of working in old buildings is saving what was originally there. These schoolhouse lights are a piece of Eastwood’s history, and we’re excited to restore, reuse, and give them new life—right here in the neighborhood.

There’s nothing like uncovering original character. From gym floors to tin ceilings, we’re saving as much of this history as possible as the Taft continues to transform.
Stay tuned!

We’re often told the easiest and cheapest way to renovate this building is to strip out the tin ceilings, original lighting, and historic details that make it special. But that’s not our approach.

Our goal is to preserve as much of the building’s character as possible—working with the original tin ceilings, beautiful old wood floors, and vintage fixtures—while thoughtfully bringing everything up to modern building code. Even without historic grants, we believe keeping the soul of this place is worth the extra effort.

Restoring an old building always comes with challenges, but for us, honoring its history is non-negotiable.

Stay tuned for more updates as this transformation continues.

Skinner Properties has started the renovation process to redevelop the former William Howard Taft School, which previously housed the American Legion 1276 for several years.

The historic building will be transformed into 28 modern rental apartments, bringing new housing opportunities to the neighborhood.

Stay tuned and watch the progress right here!
