THE MORE YOU KNOW: Understanding Illinois River Water Levels 🛶

Planning a float trip on Oklahoma's beautiful Illinois River? One of the most important things to understand before you go is how river levels affect your floating experience.

While the Illinois River is typically ideal for floating, recent rainfall can quickly change water levels and conditions. Here's a simple guide to what those levels generally mean:

🟢 BELOW 6 FEET
Perfect floating conditions for canoes, kayaks, rafts, and tubes. Expect a relaxing float with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the scenery.

🟡 AROUND 6 FEET
The river moves faster and safety precautions increase. Children 10 years old and younger are typically restricted to rafts only.

🟠 AROUND 7 FEET
The current becomes significantly stronger. Float operations generally require everyone to use rafts, and children 10 and under are not permitted to float.

🔴 ABOVE 9.5 FEET
The river becomes unsafe for recreational floating, and outfitters suspend operations until water levels return to safe ranges.

💡 Float Smart Tips

✅ Always wear your life jacket.
✅ Check river conditions before your trip.
✅ Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun.
✅ Respect wildlife and fellow floaters.
✅ Pack out everything you bring in.

🚫 Don't Bring:

❌ Glass containers
❌ Styrofoam coolers
❌ Liquor or distilled spirits
❌ Anything you aren't willing to carry back out

We’ve heard reports circulating that the Illinois River isn’t floatable this weekend (June 12–14), and that’s not accurate based on current conditions.

The Chewey gauge is sitting about 5 ft within the floatable range, and outfitters are operating.

Before canceling your plans, check directly with your river outfitter for real-time updates.

Bottom line: the river is ready-come float with us this weekend! 🌊
