Ferragosto 2026 is on Saturday, August 15, 2026. It is a major national public holiday in Italy that combines the ancient Roman festival Feriae Augusti with the Catholic feast of the Assumption of Mary. The Assumption commemorates the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken body and soul into Heaven at the end of her life. The ancient festival, established by Emperor Augustus, was a period of rest and celebration, and this aspect of Ferragosto continues today with many Italians spend the day with family, enjoy large meals, and some participate in festivals and events. Some regions have unique traditions, like processions with statues of the Virgin Mary.

There was a time when you could guess a Southern Italian baby's name before the priest even opened the register. 📖

In villages across Calabria, Sicily, and Campania, names were not chosen, they were inherited. The first son took the name of his father's father. The first daughter carried her father's mother's name. The second son and daughter honored the mother's parents.

That is why so many of us grew up surrounded by cousins named Giuseppe, Antonio, Maria, and Rosa. It was not a lack of imagination. It was la famiglia, a promise that the grandparents who came before would never be forgotten, their names living on in the arms of the newborn. 💛

For countless Italian American families, this is why the same names echo down four generations, from a stone village church in the old country to a kitchen in Brooklyn or Buenos Aires.

Did your family follow this naming tradition, and whose name got passed down to you? 👇
