We had the ENORMOUS Honor of hosting students and faculty of the James Madison University Honors Program this weekend! We were, as usual, so impressed with these young people. Every year, we've found these students to be polite and kind, without being stiff, very inquisitive and bright - asking intelligent, thoughtful questions and just being all-around great people. They were packed in like sardines and never uttered one peep of complaint.

Although they enjoyed time visiting the museum and sitting around the sunset firepit, they also spent a good deal of Saturday hauling junk up from the beach. Tangier, unfortunately, acts as a filter for a lot of the trash that pollutes the Bay. These amazing people hauled up THREE huge truckloads of debris from the beach!! We are so appreciative of this herculean effort! Thank you, JMUHP!! We can't wait to see you back next year!

Scientific research supports the idea that exposure to “blue spaces”—such as oceans, rivers, or even fountains—can meaningfully reduce stress and enhance mental well-being. Marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols introduced the concept of the Blue Mind, a calm, meditative mental state triggered by proximity to water, which contrasts with the overstimulated “Red Mind” common in modern life.

Studies show that being near water can lower cortisol levels, activate the parasympathetic nervous system, and increase the release of mood-enhancing neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.

Additionally, water’s rhythmic movement creates a “soft fascination” that gently captures attention and helps the brain recover from mental fatigue. Whether through natural settings like lakes and beaches or simple experiences like watching an aquarium or listening to water sounds, these environments provide accessible and effective ways to promote relaxation, emotional balance, and overall psychological health.

Pic of the Delvin K, the last working buyboat on the Chesapeake Bay. The owner has just recently listed it for sale. Gonna miss seeing that old boat loaded with oysters. Pic taken by our guests Chuck and Debbi Payette during their recent stay.

Every once in a while, we get to host pieces of our hearts at our humble place. These two... Lord, how we love them. I've known that handsome hunka hunka guy with the beard since he was twelve, and his drop-dead gorgeous bride for twelve years. George is as close as a blood nephew as he can get. They stopped by for a few nights, on their epic journey to the great white north. I ache with missing them, already. COME BACK!

Wowee! Our guest Bill really hit it out of the park with THIS beach find, on Saturday! According to our local expert, Tim Marshall, it's a very nice "Palmer or Amos" point, that is somewhere between 8,000 and 10,000 years old, and mostly likely knapped out of jasper! Don't miss the really cool mottled greys, and shiny, glass-like finish on this pristine, ancient arrowhead. What a beauty!

Thanks for the ID help, Tim!!

We sure had a bunch of hams staying with us at the Dune this weekend - no, really - HAMs! We, again, served as the base of operations for the Island Hoppers Group, participating in the Islands On The Air (IOTA) and Parks On The Air (POTA) amateur radio contests! They knocked it out the park (pun intended) with contacts all over the world, from right here in our Family Suite! Thanks, Corey, Scott, Santiago, Evan, Bill, Claire & Heather!! 2025 HAMFest is in the books! Bill even found an arrowhead!
