Dear Friends of High Camp,

If there’s one lesson the mountains have taught me over the years, it’s resilience.

High Camp has weathered changing seasons, challenges, and moments of incredible joy—always returning to what matters most: caring for this land and creating a place where people can reconnect with nature, with one another, and with themselves.

After many years as steward of High Camp, I’m grateful to begin passing that stewardship to my nephew, Luke Farny. Having grown up with High Camp as part of his life, Luke understands both the privilege and responsibility of caring for this special place.

While leadership evolves, our mission remains the same. Together, we will continue building on the foundation that generations before us established—honoring the past while embracing the opportunities of the future.

Thank you for being part of the Mountain Joy throughout our history and for generations to come!

With gratitude,
Cindy Farny

The journey is half the fun!

High Camp is a wonderful destination, of course, but the journey to get there is part of the magic.

Hiking through untouched wilderness surrounded by towering pines, babbling streams, and the many incredible creatures of the San Juans. The hike is fun for the whole family and is the perfect way to begin your adventure in the peace and beauty of the wilderness.

Did you know that High Camp Hut is part of an RNA?

High Camp Hut sits at the edge of something rare — the Grizzly Peak Research Natural Area, one of the most protected landscapes in the San Juan National Forest. RNAs represent the most strict level of public land protection short of full wilderness designation: no motorized use, no mechanized use, just land preserved for its ecological integrity and scientific value. Rare fens, ancient subalpine firs, slow-moving rock glaciers. Places that exist on a different timescale than the rest of us.

That protection didn’t happen by accident. High Camp Owner and Director Cindy Farny spent nearly a decade fighting for it — studying comparable areas, organizing field tours with Forest Service staff, rallying letter-writers, and hearing “it’ll never happen” more times than she can count. On January 15, 2015, the Grizzly Peak RNA became fully protected. Forever.

We share this land because of people who refused to give up on it. When you visit High Camp, you’re standing in the result of that persistence — and we hope it inspires you to speak up for the wild places you love, too!

Meet our friend the Pika 🐾

The tiny, squeaky alpine resident living in the rock moraine just outside High Camp. Related to rabbits but built for the extreme alpine conditions, pikas spend their lives above treeline, gathering and drying plants and storing them in “haypiles” all summer long to survive winter. Believe it or not, these little critters do not hibernate!

They’re tough, but sensitive, struggling when temps rise above 77°F, making them an important indicator of climate change. Every moment of foraging matters in this fragile ecosystem.

During the Wildflower & Watercolor Retreat, you’ll discover why alpine blooms like Geum rossii (Alpine Aven) are essential to their survival, and just how interconnected this landscape really is.

Come experience the magic of pikas at High Camp for yourself.
