Then & Now. Front Street Looking North - 1951.

Bottom photo is after Highway 395 bypassed the Town of Temecula just to the east where present day Interstate 15 is. Prior to the bypass Front Street was Highway 395 going right through town. The Temecula Valley Historical Society has placed signs through Temecula on the original route of Highway 395. Highway 395 was known as the "3 Nations Highway" because it connected Mexico, the United States and Canada.

Each room at the Palomar Inn has a theme based on the history of Temecula. Guestroom #6 is called 'Zeitgeist: Prohibition' and reflects the end of Prohibition (when the manufacture and consumption of alcoholic beverages was illegal) which was ratified in 1919 and repealed in 1933.

Since the small town of Temecula was so far away from the more populous cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, many a thristy person made their way here to enjoy a drink at our Blind Pig Saloon. The hotel was built 5 years before Prohibition was repealed and probably had guests who were part of that thristy journey.

One business not listed on the 1954 advertisement of businesses is the historic Palomar Inn. Built in 1928 the Palomar Inn was located on US Highway 395 (today’s Old Town Front Street). The Palomar Inn was one of three original hotels built in what is now Old Town Temecula.

The hotel was considered the first modern hotel in Temecula as it had electricity and indoor plumbing.

The Palomar Inn Hotel and the Swing Inn Café (then Mother’s Care) are the only two historic buildings in Temecula that still contain the same type of business that existed when they were both built in 1928.

The Palomar Inn Hotel is also the oldest family-owned business in Temecula as it has been owned by the same family since 1954 (71 years).

The picture shown was taken around 1948. The Palomar Inn is in the background with the original St. Katherine’s Catholic Church also pictured. The church building is now owned by the city and is located in Sam Hicks Monument Park (a block away). Today it has been restored and is now the Chapel of Memories wedding venue.

The tow truck is from Al Knott’s Garage which was located across the street from the Palomar inn Hotel. When you look down the street you will notice that the hotel was on the outskirts of town, a town that only had a population of a few hundred people.
