Hope you have a minute to read this story. For those who knew my late husband, you may remember that he had a bit of trouble getting rid of anything he thought he might EVER have a use for. Not long after we moved into the house, the gas company came and said they had to change out our meter. Seems the meter was really, really old, and it couldn't accommodate the amount of gas passing through that was needed for our furnace and our tankless water heater. The old meter was in the ground (like the water meter maybe?). They took it out, and with it came this very unattractive iron thing (pipe?), which they were going to haul away. Gene happened by about that time and convinced them to leave it, 'cause he was sure he could find a use for it. They couldn't just leave it in the alley, so he had them toss it over the wall into the yard. About a year later, I "suggested " that, since he hadn't found a use for it, perhaps we could dispose of it. "Well, Babe, it weighs 250 pounds. If you put it in the truck, I'll take it to the metal recycler." So it sat. About a year ago I noticed this volunteer growing in it. When the above-mentioned Charmagne saw it, she used her handy-dan plant identifier app and discovered it's a type of elm tree. I had no elm tree on the property of Elm Street Cottage, and now I do. So, happy birthday to me from Gene!

The Sister-of-my-Heart, Charmagne, created this lovely bed outside the Cottage. Come spring, there will be lovely purple and yellow hyacinths popping up here. Can't wait! Thank you, Sister!

The end of the third week since Elm Street Cottage began accepting bookings and we've been booked each week-- great guests, and I learn something almost daily about how to be a good host. Looking forward to meeting the next folks who've already booked!

When my husband and I decided to move to Temple from Liberty, a very small town northeast of Houston, we spent some time here in town looking for the neighborhood we wanted to be in and the house we wanted to make our home. We were living in the house Gene grew up in, a farmhouse built in 1896 and moved into town in 1946 by his parents.
We found this neighborhood and thought it fit our needs really well, and one day driving down 7th Street we saw a house with a “For Sale by Owner” sign. We were in love.

Bonus! In the bargain we got a comfy little guesthouse that I have decided to offer to visitors to Temple who want a nice place to stay close to downtown.
