August. Back-to-school shopping. Supply lists. We get it — it's a lot. 😅

But before the calendar fills back up with carpool lines and homework, there might be just enough time for one more real trip.

Here's what we found: if you're in Albuquerque or Santa Fe, school starts August 7 — so this coming weekend is genuinely your last easy window. Dallas families have a few extra days (Aug 11). And if you're coming from Amarillo, you've got until the 18th — more runway than you think.

Up here at 7,700 feet, the crowds are already thinning, the nights are properly cool, the river is still cold and running, and the stars come out sharp over the canyon. It's the kind of last-minute trip that makes better memories than one more Target run.

Forget the necktie. Give Dad a 3-story log cabin in the cool of the Santa Fe National Forest — room for the whole family (sleeps 14), a wraparound deck, a fire to sit by, and the Pecos River just down the hill. 🤣😝🥵True story: I gave a talk in Phoenix one July 4th weekend, and after a brutal day I couldn't wait to cool off in the pool back at our Airbnb. I held out until 10 p.m. and dove in expecting relief — and the water felt like a warm bath. 🥵 Even the pool had given up.

We're about 6.5 hours north, up at 7,700 feet in the New Mexico high country. Same season, completely different world: 70s in the day, 40s at night, windows open.

🥰🤩😎This Memorial Day, instead of a backyard BBQ, what if you stood on an actual battlefield?

Most people don't know the Civil War reached New Mexico. In March 1862, Union and Confederate forces fought a three-day battle just 45 minutes down the canyon from our cabins — a clash historians call "the Gettysburg of the West." The outcome changed the fate of the entire Southwest forever.

The Glorieta Pass Battlefield is free to visit, largely unknown, and genuinely moving. Then come back up the canyon, light the fire pit, and watch the stars come out at 7,700 feet.
That's a Memorial Day worth remembering. 🎖️🏔️
