What you packed: the dog bed, way too many snacks, a headlamp you'll actually use. Where you went: into the park for the overlooks while the dog held down camp, then straight back to 30 private acres the second you were through the gate. What you did: let the dog explore the grounds, built a fire, watched the sky turn gold before the stars took over.

Monsoon season came through Terlingua and gave Terlingua Creek about a week and a half to turn green, and the whole pack found out before we did. Nothing like grass this tall to turn a morning walk into a full-on chase. It won’t last, the desert never keeps this color for long, but for now we’re letting them run it out. Out here, you take the green while it’s green.

Terlingua got rain, and the desert didn’t waste a second. These blooms weren’t here last week. Give the Chihuahuan Desert a little water and it answers back in hot pink, right out of the gravel and thorn.
