🎉Happy Holiday!🎊 Fort Posada Saturday Dec. 13th at 6pm- Fort Leaton State Historic Site.
Come join us for this special Posada on the Borderlands. This tradition of Posada dates back 400 years to 1586 when Christian missionaries used reenactment to teach Catholic liturgy to the Mexican and Natives. These early Christmas pagenants- for lack of a better word- transformed the indigenous winter solstice celebration honoring the Aztec God Huitzilopochtli into the Christmas traditions we have today. It was in 1586 that Augustinian Frair Diego de Soria got permission from Pope Sixtuss V to celebrate extra masses at Christmas (in spanish- misas de aguinaldo) between Dec. 16th and 24th, also known as the Misa de Gallo or "Rooster's Mass" Misa de los Pastores- shepherds' mass. This is the midnight mass celebration in Spanish colonials on Christmas eve.

At the Fort we will reenact trying to find lodging in Bethlehem for Mary to have baby Jesus. The procession of people holding candles will walk from a spot at the first window of the Forts exterior singing back and forth between the "inn keeper" and Joseph asking for shelter, until we are let in to the Fort courtyard.

Once inside the Fort "Inn" traditional Mexican food is served:
*Tamales represent the first gift you unwrap
* Hot drinks are served- Champurrado, Hot chocolate and coffee
* Traditional cookies- Biscochos, Empanadas

We will also have Presidio LRFMS folcklorico dancers, Mariachi Santa Cruz, Ballet Folklorico Nueva Generacion de Terlingua ISD and music by Diablitos Azules.

🌵🐾 Wild Neighbors of the Desert 🐾🌵

While we were out working on our new cabin, our friend and neighbor Jim Boatman stopped by with incredible photos of the local wildlife — and wow, what a reminder of how alive the desert really is!

Out here you might spot black bears, badgers, javelina and babies, quail, bobcats, mountain lions, desert foxes, and even the occasional tarantula wandering by. And if you listen closely at night, you’ll definitely hear the coyotes calling in the distance — one of those sounds that makes the desert feel truly wild. 🌙🐺

It’s part of what makes this place so special — peaceful, untouched, and full of desert life doing its thing right alongside you. 🌅
