Here they come! BirdCast migration alerts just went out for Alpine TX and the Big Bend area - along with almost all of Texas! Millions of birds coming through, so please turn out those nonessential lights to help ‘em out!

Help protect migratory birds:

🐦‍⬛ turn off all non-essential lighting between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM;

🐦‍⬛ turn off or dim any non-essential exterior building lighting;

🐦‍⬛ close curtains or blinds to reduce the escape of interior lighting; and

🐦‍⬛ avoid illuminating lobbies, plants or fountains that may attract birds.

Why go Lights Out?

Most birds migrate at night, employing an incredible sensory system to navigate and to orient in darkness. Light pollution attracts and disorients these migrating birds, disrupting these systems and increasing birds’ vulnerability to collisions with structures. An estimated 365–988 million birds die in collisions with buildings annually, including a number of species of high conservation concern. You can help dramatically reduce the hazards from light pollution for nocturnally migrating birds by turning off all non-essential lighting.

To see when birds are migrating over your area anywhere in the continental US, follow the BirdCast Migration Dashboard here: https://dashboard.birdcast.info.

They are so special to us and tend to be in the middle of the road a lot of the time.

Happy Friday, Y’all!

We hope you enjoy the Memorial Day weekend! Here are some tips to help you have fun, stay safe, and stay hydrated:

1️⃣ Plan Ahead: Make sure you have a plan for the weekend's activities, whether it's a BBQ, beach trip, or a quiet day at home.

2️⃣ Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you're spending time outdoors. Keep a water bottle with you and refill it regularly.

3️⃣ Use Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the sun by applying sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and reapply every two hours or after swimming.

4️⃣ Wear Protective Clothing: Wear a hat, sunglasses, and light, breathable clothing to shield yourself from the sun.

5️⃣ Stay Cool: Find shade or air-conditioned areas to avoid overheating, especially during peak sun hours (10 AM to 4 PM).

6️⃣ Grill Safely: If you're barbecuing, keep the grill away from structures and flammable materials. Never leave it unattended.

7️⃣ Stay Informed: Keep an eye on the weather and local advisories to stay prepared.

8️⃣ Enjoy Responsibly: If you’re drinking alcohol, do so in moderation and ensure you have a designated driver or use ride-sharing services.

Have a fantastic and safe Memorial Day weekend!
