See the young man in this picture? He was 18 years old when it was taken at the train station in Mobile, Alabama, in 1952.
There is $1.50 in his pocket. In that bag by his foot are two changes of clothes. (And if his mama was anything like most other mamas in the South, probably some sandwiches and other snacks.)
He was on his way to Indiana to take a job. He was going to play baseball for the Indy Clowns of the Negro Leagues. Apparently, he was pretty good at it. A couple of years later, he was signed by the Milwaukee Brewers. He played for the Brewers for 2 seasons, then moved across town to the Braves, and later followed them to Atlanta. Eventually, he was the last Negro League player to be on a major league roster.
He still hangs around the baseball world. At the moment, he's the senior vice president of the Atlanta Braves. Even though the team has changed stadiums (twice) since then, his retired number, 44, still hangs on the outfield wall of the old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium near where he belted a homer to break Babe Ruth's all-time record which he held for 33 years).
Remembering "Hammerin' Hank" Aaron, who passed away on 22 January 2021.

There are certain things that my parents instilled in me from day one. I was taught to always treat everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of how different they might be from me. I was also taught never to show up to someone's home empty-handed. I was taught that being early is always prefer...

Miracle on 34th Street, Harriott House approaches her 100th birthday and is looking better than ever !

Built in 1920 as the “Show Home” for Edgewood Grove Subdivision, this Eastside Terre Haute home, at 101 N. 34th Street, was a meeting place where potential homeowners would examine floor plans and choose lots on which to build their homes in Edgewood Grove, a subdivision located just one block South of the home. Since the Harriott family became pregnant with a second child before beginning to build their home in Edgewood Grove, the husband convinced the contractors to let him rent and then purchase this beautiful home, a home which has been occupied by one family, the Harriott Family (after the death of the Harriott’s, the home was left to their married daughter who was raised in the home), until now.

As the home prepares for it’s 100th birthday in 2020, I have adopted it and worked diligently, around the clock, this summer and fall of 2019, to bring out the beauty of this historic home by providing a color makeover, a little chin tuck, bone marrow scraping and resupporting, face lift plaster makeover, cabinet manicures, and various underwire readjustments, and I have now dubbed my home “The Harriott House”, in honor of it’s first family, and have decided to share this home with my community through private bookings and through airbnb and booking.com. Please book with us and be our guests to explore and discover the original amenities, built ins, and other small details that have been preserved and restored to make this home more glorious than ever !
