Here’s a little belt science for everyone that doesn’t know why you should always break in your belt!!!!!!

1. The belt conforms to the clutch faces. A brand-new belt and the machined clutch sheaves aren’t microscopically perfect matches. Moderate operation lets the belt’s sidewalls establish a more uniform contact pattern against the sheaves. That spreads the load across more of the belt instead of concentrating it in tiny high-pressure areas.
2. It goes through controlled heat cycles. CVT belts heat up as they flex thousands of times per minute and transmit torque. Gradually bringing a new belt up to operating temperature and then allowing it to cool gives the belt’s elastomer and internal construction a controlled initial conditioning period. What you don’t want is an immediate massive thermal spike from full-throttle launches.
3. It reduces localized glazing and scorching. If you hammer a brand-new belt before the contact surfaces have settled in, localized slipping can generate tremendous heat. The surface can glaze, which lowers its coefficient of friction. Less friction causes more slipping → more heat → more glazing. That’s a vicious cycle that can dramatically shorten belt life.
4. It protects the internal tensile cords. The cords are what keep the belt from stretching substantially under load. Abrupt maximum torque and high temperature during the first operating period can put very high stresses into the belt before everything has established an even load distribution. Gradual loading reduces those localized stresses.
