Autumn shapes and colors in the Naches river valley. Lichen-covered andesite and a stumbling Nick Fenton , blooming grey rabbitbrush, quivering stalks of strict buckwheat, and a little guy sticking his tongue out at you (aka elk vertebra).

Yakima Valley produces 75% of the nation’s hops, which makes this time of year extremely cool for people who love stanky fresh b**r and enjoy gazing upon football fields of hop cones coming to perfect moisture content, and prefer that the region carry a general aroma of skunky hops. (It me)

Thanks to CLS Farms for this mind-boggling tour of your sorting and curing operations during peak harvest. And thank you to all the thousands of people out here growing and processing hops! Yakima Valley rules!

Fan Favorite Cabin 4! A sweet studio cabin perched on the lawn, with original red fir floors, painstakingly restored by Yours Truly on her hands and knees. Play house in a studio cabin, with every amenity at a particularly cozy scale for one or two.

Well that was quick… harvest time again! It came a bit early, along with a cool breeze. Turns out we’re not in charge of the seasons.

Farm markets throughout the valley are full of fresh orchard produce. Taste the rainbow!

A sunny meander with friends along the Tieton River valley, spotting a golden eagle (endangered!), the generous late-summer flowering of green and gray rabbitbrush, and, of course, the columnar evidence of Geologic Time. Zoom in on the last slide to spy rock climbers on the andesite wall!

Clear air and open cabins through the coming week. Take a hike!

Hang on, summer! The sun’s still high but nights have cooled. Chinook Pass is open for loops around Mt Rainier for just bit longer. Farmers still have stone fruit and sweet corn, but apple harvest is coming early.

Take a holiday before the seasons change: cabins are open around Labor Day and the last weekend of the month.
