Life beyond messure

Major A. Kenneth Wilson asks a question worth sitting with this week: What are your assets?

Not your financial portfolio – your actual, right-now inventory. The people around you. The place you live. The fact that you're alive. And where there's life, Wilson writes, there is hope.

He walks through the feeding of the 5,000, drawing out a detail that's easy to miss. Philip looked at the crowd and saw the price tag. Andrew found a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish – and still couldn't see how it would be enough. But Jesus already knew the answer before he asked the question.

Wilson traces the same pattern across Scripture: God choosing insecure Gideon, Moses with his confidence problem, David the runt of Jesse's family, Bethlehem as a grubby second-rate suburb for the birth of a King. Over and over, the small and overlooked become the raw material for God's greatest work.

"It may not appear to be much," Wilson writes, "but little is plenty when the Lord uses it."
