You don’t have to be deep in the woods to pick up a tick. A walk to the mailbox, an afternoon in the garden, or mowing the lawn can be enough this time of year.

Right now it’s prime time for ticks here in Oklahoma and the CDC says emergency room visits for tick bites are up across the Midwest, reaching the highest levels since 2017.

Ticks can carry illnesses like Lyme disease and alpha-gal syndrome (that’s the one that makes you allergic to red meat), but experts say there’s no reason to stay indoors. The key is being prepared:

✔️ Use an insect repellent containing DEET
✔️ Wear long sleeves and pants when possible, especially when going out in tall grass
✔️ Tuck pant legs into your socks in heavy brush
✔️ Check yourself, your kids, and your pets after spending time outside

If you find a tick, remove it as soon as possible and keep an eye on the bite area.

You can also help Oklahoma researchers track tick populations across the state by reporting any that you come across through the iNaturalist app.
