Most of the time we check the forecast before a getaway hoping for sunshine, little wind and perfect conditions. But one of our favorite things about the North Shore is how quickly the weather can change…and how stunningly beautiful the changes are here.

Lake Superior is massive and creates its own microclimate, pulling in fog, mist, and dramatic skies that can transform the landscape in a matter of minutes (which is why we always tell guests to pack layers for their trip and especially on hikes).

Some days are filled with warm sunshine making the big lake sparkling turquoise blue and others feel like you’ve stepped into a magical other world.

It can be hard to force yourself out into rain or cold, but we promise up here, once you step out into the forest, you won’t regret it. Mother nature will heal you in ways you didn’t expect, if you let her 🫶🍃

Happy Memorial Day, and what a gorgeous day it is in Minnesota! ☀️ Who would you want to spend a slow Summer morning here with?

Coffee in bed, on the patio and in hand walking down our trail to watch Lake Superior from above. Followed by a few minute drive to grab breakfast, a hike along the river and lake and soaking in the morning sun twinkling through the beautiful forest.

Then, head back to the cabin for a steamy shower and an afternoon nap with the fresh lake air breeze. These are the kind of mornings we all need more of, don’t you think? It truly is the little things.

Share with someone who deserves a quiet, slow cabin morning here 🌱🧡

Sunshine is always wonderful but there is just something about a rainy day in the cabin 🫶☕️ Fire on, steamy coffee in hand and the oversized sliding doors open to the smells and sounds of the forest and Lake Superior. Maybe even a slow walk in the rain down our forest trail to soak in the views of the big blue lake? Life’s stress just melts away here.

The way the sunlight streams into the cabins morning, afternoon and evening is one of those little moments that take your breath away. The way it turns Lake Superior into a turquoise blue sea that crashes onto towering rock cliffs below you. But…you have to be present to notice the smallest of details. The way it sparkles into the bathroom and through the forest below you in the morning, the way the evening sun streams through the massive window in the kitchen and onto the 140 year old wood, dancing and warming your soul. It’s worth slowing down and noticing the little things, don’t you think? 🌱☀️

Waterfalls are absolutely peaking up the North Shore right now and somehow every turn feels more beautiful than the last.

Slow mornings with coffee in the cabin, grilling out on your patio after a day of hiking, bonfires under the pines, cozying up by the fire after a sauna, and maybe finally putting your phone down for a bit.

Coffee at Java Moose in Grand Marais, fish tacos at , lunch on the water at , hikes through Kadunce Gorge, and long sauna sessions at Sisu + Löyly. Maybe even a beer on the patio

The weather this weekend looks pretty perfect for chasing waterfalls, sitting by Lake Superior, hiking the Superior Hiking Trail, or simply doing a whole lot of nothing at all.

A have a couple cabins still open at Tofte Trails. Book your stay via the link in our bio.

We caught this rainbow over one of our favorite waterfalls above Lake Superior yesterday afternoon…it took our breath away 🌈

May is peak waterfall season on the North Shore where we have strong flows, fresh green and flowers popping up and fewer crowds before the rush of summer begins.

If you’ve been thinking about a spring trip, it truly is a beautiful time to come.

We still have a few May dates open at Tofte Trails. Link in our bio to book your dates. 🌱

When we first started designing the cabins we had just stayed in a little old wood little cabin up on the Gunflint Trail. The floors were slanted, the wood was imperfect and it was just what we needed…except for a few things.

We found ourselves wanting the old cabin feel but with bigger windows to let the beautiful forest inside, warmer floors, good lighting, a storage area for our gear and dog supplies, and simply a place to sit with a hot cup of coffee where we could also grill a meal in the evening near the bonfire.

We didn’t want anything trendy, we wanted timeless, something that blended into the forest instead of taking away from it.

We hope you enjoy each slow moment and every detail during your stay with us. Curious, if you have stayed with us what do you remember most from your stay?
