Me and Lakota are getting a late start on our walk for the day but we’re doing it and I haven’t taken a picture of the mountain in a long time cause it’s either been cloudy or you couldn’t see it good so today was a good day for a picture and as you can see, there’s angel dust on top of the mountains and typically this time of year when that happens it melts the next day that’s been there for almost a week

🔥 TOK, ALASKA: A COMMUNITY THAT HAS FACED FIRE BEFORE 🔥

As our community begins the long process of recovering from the Mukluk Fire, I wanted to look back at Tok’s history with wildfires.

What I found was eye-opening.

According to Alaska’s official wildfire records, there have been approximately 246 recorded wildland fires within about 30 miles of Tok during the past two decades. Thankfully, firefighters caught most of them while they were still an acre or less. Those small fires seldom make the news, but each one represents firefighters, equipment operators, pilots, dispatchers and local volunteers stepping in before a dangerous situation became a disaster.

Some fires were not so easily stopped.

In 2010, the lightning-caused Eagle Trail Fire burned nearly 18,000 acres and threatened Tok and Tanacross. Suppressing that fire reportedly cost the State of Alaska more than $9 million.

In 2013, the Tetlin Junction Ridge Fire burned more than 20,000 acres. In 2015, another Tetlin Hills fire burned nearly 1,900 acres. Fires near the Tok and Tetlin rivers burned more than 1,400 acres in 2016.

Then came 2025. The Seven Mile Lookout Fire burned more than 4,000 acres south of Tok, while several other large fires burned throughout the surrounding country.

But Tok’s history with fire goes back even farther.

In July 1990, a lightning-caused wildfire jumped two rivers and the Alaska Highway. Tok was evacuated, and more than 1,000 firefighters worked to save the community. The fire came dangerously close to town before what local residents called a “miracle wind” changed its direction. That fire eventually burned more than 100,000 acres.

Thirty-six years later, the Mukluk Fire brought the flames directly into our neighborhoods.

It grew from a small fire into thousands of acres in a matter of hours. It forced evacuations and ultimately destroyed 44 homes. For a community the size of Tok, that is a devastating loss unlike anything most of us have witnessed here.

Yet history also tells another story.

Tok survives.

We survived the fire of 1990. We faced the Eagle Trail Fire, the Tetlin fires, the Seven Mile Lookout Fire and hundreds of smaller fires that were stopped before they could become disasters. Now we will face the aftermath of the Mukluk Fire together.

We owe an enormous thank-you to every local volunteer, firefighter, smokejumper, hotshot, equipment operator, pilot, emergency worker, law-enforcement officer, utility worker, cook, shelter volunteer and neighbor who stepped forward.

Some members of the firefighting community continued working even after losing their own homes. That kind of courage and dedication should never be forgotten.

Fire has left scars across the land surrounding Tok, but those burned areas eventually grow green again. New trees rise, wildlife returns and the land begins to heal.

Our community will heal too.

Tok has always been made up of strong, independent people who take care of one another. We may have lost homes, buildings and possessions, but we have not lost the spirit of this town.

Tok has stood before.

Tok will stand again. ❤️

Please share this story so people across Alaska—and across the country—understand what our small community has endured and why our neighbors still need help.

🔥 TOK’S MUKLUK FIRE — OUR COMMUNITY HAS BEEN CHANGED FOREVER 🔥

On August 17, the Mukluk Fire tore through neighborhoods in Tok with frightening speed. Families had only minutes to leave, and many escaped with little more than the clothes they were wearing.

As of the latest official update:

• 44 homes have been confirmed destroyed
• Approximately 7,260 acres have burned
• The fire is 20% contained
• 350 firefighting personnel are assigned to the fire
• At the height of the aerial response, five helicopters, three retardant-dropping air tankers, two water-scooping aircraft and one coordination aircraft supported the firefighters on the ground
• Fire crews came from across Alaska, the Lower 48 and Yukon, Canada

Officials have not yet released a confirmed number of people displaced, but 44 destroyed homes means dozens of Tok families have lost their homes, possessions and sense of security—just as winter approaches.

We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to every firefighter, smokejumper, pilot, equipment operator, emergency responder and volunteer who came to protect Tok. We are especially grateful to our local firefighters and emergency personnel who continued working even while members of their own families and departments suffered losses.

We also want to thank every volunteer who stepped forward to prepare and deliver meals, collect supplies, provide shelter, care for animals and help displaced families in countless other ways. This community came together when it mattered most.

Tracy and I, along with everyone at Sourdough Campground, would also like to sincerely thank all the people who saw our post and donated money through the Pay It Forward Blessings account at Denali State Bank. We do not have the final amount raised yet, but every donation—large or small—will help families who have lost so much. Your generosity and willingness to help our little community mean more than we can put into words.

Thank you to Denali State Bank for helping make these donations possible and for supporting the people of Tok during this difficult time.

Tok is a small town, but we are a strong community. The fire may have taken homes and possessions, but it did not take our determination to stand together, help our neighbors and rebuild.

Please continue praying for Tok, the families who lost everything and everyone still working on this fire. Please share our story so people across Alaska and the rest of the country understand what happened here and how much help our community will need in the months ahead.

From all of us at Sourdough Campground—thank you for standing with Tok.

OK, hopefully my last post on the fire other than I’ll try to get a total of money raised so I can post on here how many homes we lost it wasn’t a ton but we don’t have a ton of homes in Tok. One number I heard was nine, but that’s not official number. My job cooking is done so I get to go home now and have a cold beer and relax for a little while thanks for all your support. We appreciate it and I’ll get some numbers to all you people that are watching in a day or two thank you.

Just a little information because people have been reaching out and asking we’ve served over 2100 people in basically three days through this kitchen at Tok School. I’ve done all the cooking with help from the amazing teachers, students and the District office staff including the Superintendent packaging the food. Everyone stepped up and really helped out in the time of need for our town. A huge thank you to all that have donated food, snacks, water and help.

Quick update before I get to cooking got coffee brewed starting to make bagel sandwiches. We had a lot of rain last night which is awesome. Looks like it’s gonna be overcast and cool today so that’ll help with the fire. Just getting ready to feed some people.

So I’m just headed out the back door of the school where some of my pictures came from for the fire and as you can see no smoke doesn’t mean the fires out but it’s obviously been knocked down really good. I haven’t had a chance to leave to school to find out any update on the fire cause I’ve been there nonstop since Tuesday so dinner was slow tonight. I believe we are done serving food on Saturday.
