A must do if you’re up for a scenic drive!!

One of Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s most incredible experiences is driving the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, a narrow 5.5-mile, one-way loop located just beyond Gatlinburg. The road curves through a green forest filled with rushing streams, mossy boulders, old-growth trees, and historic log buildings left from the families who once lived here. Several pull-offs make it easy to pause, enjoy the scenery, or begin one of the area’s popular hikes along the way.

The route takes its name from Roaring Fork, one of the park’s larger and faster mountain streams, which becomes especially loud and powerful after heavy rain. Black bears, white-tailed deer, and wild turkeys are often spotted near the roadway, though every animal should be viewed from a safe distance. Grotto Falls is reached by a 2.6-mile round-trip hike and is the only waterfall in the park with a trail that passes behind the 25-foot cascade.

Nearby, the more demanding Rainbow Falls Trail leads to an impressive 80-foot waterfall. Toward the end of the drive, watch for Place of a Thousand Drips, where rainfall creates dozens of small streams that tumble across a roadside rock face.
