Here’s how we’d spend an adventurous weekend in the Great Smoky Mountains without the crowds in Gatlinburg. 🪵🥾

Night 1: Grab dinner at Dancing Bear Lodge & Appalachian Bistro & settle into Tremont Lodge for the ultimate cabin stay experience. It’s perfectly nestled into the peaceful side of the Smokies.

Day 1: Wake up bright & early to the mountain views & head out to beat the crowds at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Grab coffee & breakfast Towns End Coffee Co for the road. ☕️

Townsend has its own entrance into the park & is the quietest of the three main entrances (and closest to the lodge). From here you can drive into Cades Cove and watch the sunrise. Capture some beautiful photos and maybe even get in a hike before lunch. Abrams Falls is the must-do hike inside Cades Cove. 🌄

Get refuelled at Peaceful Side Social with wood-fired pizza, craft b**r and ice cream Peaceful Side Creamery🍦

Stop by the Dark Island Swinging Bridge. A historic swinging bridge over the Little River, perfect for a short scenic walk and photographs.

Night 2: Head back to Tremont to unwind, take a nap or a swim, maybe grab a game of pickleball and BBQ for dinner. Finish the night off fireside and with an outdoor movie on the property. 🔥🪵🌲

Day 2: Wake up slow and have coffee & breakfast while taking in the mountain views from your room. Spend the afternoon on a distillery tour or taking in the Tuckaleechee Caverns. Hit up The Abbey for a late lunch and get back to the pool by mid-afternoon to soak up the last few hours of your mountain getaway.

Save this for your next weekend getaway & as a reminder that you can fit a lot of goodness into 48 hours.

🌄 Arrive before 8am
Traffic gets crazy and parking lots get full after 8am. Avoid the crowds, watch the sunrise and be done hiking by lunch. It’s worth it!

📅 Visit midweek
Weekends bring a major influx of tourists AND locals. Tuesday–Thursday = fewer people, shorter lines and less traffic in the congested / popular areas of the park.

❄️ Don’t rule out winter
It is tranquil and beautiful during the winter months. The quiet stretch is December through February where it feels like you have the Smokies all to yourself.

🌲 Stay in Townsend
Townsend has its own entrance into Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the quietest of the three main entrances. This place is the ultimate hack – close to the best outdoor adventures, restaurants, scenic drives, and family-friendly attractions.

⛰️ Avoid the crowds all together at Tremont Lodge
For guests staying at Tremont Lodge, the Townsend entrance makes it easy to spend the morning in the park and still be back at the property for lunch, a swim, or a slower afternoon. The Townsend Wye, a few minutes from your room, is one of the park’s most-loved swimming and picnic spots.

This is Townsend – and here’s everything you need to know about it…

1. The Foothills Parkway is just to the north & west of Townsend and offers amazing high elevation views of the Smokies and the Tennessee Valley.

2. Townsend is one of three “gateways” (& the most peaceful) to enter the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

3. The food scene is surprisingly awesome here with craft breweries, farm-to-table dining and zero chains. Just local spots run by people who chose the peaceful side of the Smokies.

4. You can see the Milky Way and endless stars from almost anywhere here. 80% of Americans never see this.

5. It has several museums, attractions and local artisans while still maintaining a population of 550 people. This is where charm meets the perfect mountain getaway.

Stay at Tremont in the heart of Townsend. Bike around town, enjoy mountain views from your balcony and see what this special town is all about.

This or a generic park hotel? The choice is easy.

1) A single day in Great Smoky Mountains National Park can cover some highlights, but it will be a whirlwind.
The park spans over 800 miles of trails & several distinct areas. With 2 or more days, you can slow down to explore the Cades Cove drive & less crowded trails like Ramsey Cascades.

2) Crowds are very real.
The park draws more visitors than any other in the country. Beat them by starting early & drive / hike before 9 AM or go after 4 PM.

3) Location = everything.
There is a quieter option. If you’re looking for a quieter, less commercialized stay, Townsend, TN is known as the peaceful side of the Smokies. Mountain views from your balcony and easy access to Cades Cove.

4) Parking tags are required.
Parking passes are now required for vehicles parking more than 15 minutes in the park. Purchase daily ($5), weekly ($15), or annual ($40) passes.

5) Start the day at Kuwohi (Clingmans Dome) to catch the sunrise from the park’s highest point. On a clear morning, the observation tower delivers 360-degree views across several states.

6) It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
And an International Biosphere Reserve that is home to one of the most diverse ecosystems in the temperate world.

7) The Milky Way is visible so make time for it.
The night sky over the Smoky Mountains really delivers some of the most stunning stargazing opportunities you’ll find in the eastern U.S. Its unforgettable. It’s also one of the few places where synchronous fireflies light up the forest each summer. 🌌

8) Drive the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail.
It’s an infamous seasonal, one-way scenic loop. A 5.5-mile drive packed with dense forest, historic cabins, and easy pull-offs.

9) There are some seasonal road closures.
Certain roads like Clingmans Dome Road and Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail close in winter.

10) It’s an amazing place year round.
The best time to visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park is Fall (late Sept to early Nov) for the best autumn foliage in the country. From April to June, trails are lush, waterfalls are flowing, and wildlife is active.

Planning a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park? 🕰️🍂🪵 Timing is everything.

Arrive after 10am and here’s what you’re facing:
• bumper to bumper traffic
• packed trails
• lines in Gaitlinburg for shuttles, food and parking

The sweet spot:
Avoid traffic, set your alarm and explore the park early in the morning. It’s the best way to enjoy the trip, capture some amazing sunrise photos and not have your patience tested.

BONUS: if you are going to eat in Gaitlinburg, consider going at off-times and avoid meal times. The key is in those in-between hours. It can be common to have a 2-hour wait at peak times.

PRO TIP: stay on the peaceful side of the Smokies to enjoy more quiet time and way less traffic / lines. There’s a reason why this is Tennessee’s best kept secret. ⛰️🍂🪵
