🇺🇸 Appalachia in the Revolution: The Overmountain Men

When British Major Patrick Ferguson threatened to cross the Blue Ridge, hang their leaders, and lay waste to their land, the mountain men of the Watauga, Nolichucky, and Holston valleys didn't wait. They marched.

More than 1,000 frontiersmen gathered at Sycamore Shoals in the fall of 1780 and set out over the mountains. On October 7, at Kings Mountain, they surrounded and crushed Ferguson's loyalist force. It stopped a British invasion of North Carolina cold.

Among their number was John Sevier, whose name lives on in Sevier County and Sevierville, Tennessee. Forty-two years later, Thomas Jefferson recalled the battle as "the joyful annunciation of that turn of the tide of success which terminated the Revolutionary War."

These mountains were part of America's founding story. Come celebrate 250 years of it.

The Independence 250 Concert is July 4 at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center. Tickets are limited. Reserve yours now at https://gsmheritagecenter.org/event/independence-250-concert-on-the-fourth/
