Tennessee’s Lost Cove Cave is a wild cave inside the South Cumberland Recreation Area in Franklin County, not far from Chattanooga. It has three different entrances, but the main one...called the Buggytop Cave entrance...is the most impressive. It’s 100 feet wide, 80 feet tall, and opens beneath a 150-foot bluff with a stream flowing out. The cave runs from Lost Cove to the head of Crow Creek and can be explored with the right gear. You can only go inside from May 1st to August 31st with an online permit, and you’ll need to be careful not to harm the cave’s delicate environment. But even if you’re not going in, you can hike the four-mile (round trip) Buggytop Trail to see the giant entrance from the outside any time of year.
