Wow! Downtown TC (Official)

THROWBACK (every other) THURSDAY, a day late.

Here we bring you one of the earliest known photographs of Traverse City, taken in 1866 at the south Union Street bridge (near where the Post Office now stands). While it is not specified, we are of the opinion that the viewer is looking south based on what appears to be a thick forest off in the distance.

Have a close look at this shot and let your mind wander. Your beloved Traverse City was more or less an outpost in the wilderness then, a wilderness that was essentially clear cut starting around this time and accelerating through the close of the 19th century.
