Proof that the magic doesn’t plant itself 🌱

Shoutout to Al and Kayla, two of the incredible humans who keep Cornelius Pass Roadhouse looking effortlessly beautiful. From the Wedding Grove to every leafy corner, our gardeners are constantly out here making the space feel alive, welcoming, and a little extra special.

We notice. We appreciate. And honestly? We’re obsessed with their work.

Edgefield? Fully decked out. ✨🌲

Our garden team spent the first week of December turning the whole property into a cozy PNW holiday dream. Think cookie-decorated trees (big thanks to our bakery crew), handmade wreaths, and every corner giving major nostalgic vibes.

Each tree has its own theme… so now we have one question:

How many can you find? 🎄👀✨

This time of year, our gardeners carefully clear leaves from paths and walkways so you can wander with ease… but in the garden beds, the leaves stay right where they fall.

Why? Because those quiet piles become winter shelter for pollinators, a soft blanket that protects roots from the cold, and (over time) a natural compost that feeds the soil. It’s one of the simplest, kindest things we can offer the land.

So if you’re staring down a yard full of leaves this season, consider letting some rest. Nature knows what to do with them. 🌿✨

From our gardens to Grand Lodge’s Fermentation Chamber, these peppers are on a mission. 🌶️✨

As September ended, our gardeners harvested nearly 1,500 lbs of peppers from across McMenamins properties (this batch from Edgefield) destined for our famous Piped Pepper Hot Sauce. Once they arrive at Grand Lodge, the peppers are fermented to perfection, transforming into the fiery sauce fans can’t get enough of.

🔥 Who’s counting down the days until this year’s hot sauce drops?

The blooms at Edgefield aren’t just pretty, they’re purposeful. 🌸

Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds are hard at work helping pollinate the crops we grow on site. Those same crops become the base for McMenamins spirits, ciders, and other tasty creations you’ll find across our pubs. 🍷🍏✨

So when you order that pint or cocktail, you’re raising a glass to the tiniest farmhands on the property. Not bad company to drink with, right? 😉

As you wander through the gardens at Kalama Harbor Lodge, you’ll find some unique floral gems that are putting on quite the show this season. Take the Gordlinia grandiflora, for example. This small tree is at its best right now, combining vibrant fall colors with stunning white blooms. Picture this: deep red foliage with large, 4-inch flowers scattered across its branches—it’s like the tree can’t decide whether to dress for summer or autumn. At 15-20 feet tall, it’s a striking sight and a true testament to its East Coast hybrid roots.

Further down the hill towards the beach, you’ll come across the Colletia hystrix, known as the Barbed Wire Bush. Don’t be fooled by its spiky, tough look—beneath that sharp exterior lies a soft side, as it surprises you with masses of tiny, fragrant flowers. Growing to about 5 feet, this evergreen adds a sculptural element to the landscape, and while it’s drought-tolerant, it’s also tough as nails, literally!

Lastly, tucked away on the beach hill is our Grevillea victoriae 'Murray Valley Queen'. This one’s a real winter wonder. While its green leaves are lush year-round, it’s the blooms that steal the spotlight, especially when Anna’s Hummingbirds come flocking to sip from its orange flowers. Blooming in the coldest months, it’s like a pop of warmth in the middle of winter—just what the garden needs.

Each of these plants has a story to tell, adding texture, color, and life to Kalama’s gardens no matter the season. 🌸✨

Tea Olive might not be flashy, but its scent sure is unforgettable. These tiny Osmanthus flowers are in full bloom outside the The White Eagle , perfuming September and October with their signature apricot-vanilla aroma. Who knew small could be so mighty? 🌿
