With siding all done now, little strides are being made on various things. Trim being painted, oiled, and installed around the four garage doors. French doors have gotten their final coats of protection and install work begins tomorrow on those. In and amongst all of this... the daunting task of sorting thru buckets and containers worth of misc hardware for what can be saved for future use and what is corroded and goes to scrap.

What are we working on now? Soffit Vents. Each one has to be custom measured and cut. Thankfully, we have more 1x wood remnants we're repurposing for this. Marked for 3 in. holes, then drilled. Screen & galvanized 1/4x1/4 grid patches are all pre-cut then set and stapled to the backsides. Then test fit, trimmed slightly (because all the rafters have twists and warping) as needed, and screwed in place. A bit tedious but having precut the screen patches and metal grids cuts time down drastically.

The moment you all have waited for! After a one month delay in the middle of it all and LOTS of sore muscles... here is the finished siding replacement on the barn. It will begin to rust (patina) naturally over the summer and especially once our monsoon season kicks here in another month or so. Once that happens the siding will look as old as the barn is.
This job was as huge as the concrete floor pour we did in the very beginning of barn repairs. If any of my Tucson friends need a lead on a great handyman/carpenter/siding man... message or text me. I can highly recommend him!!

We're so very close to wrapping up the HUGE siding replacement project! Here is a glimpse of what went into the prep for each and every siding panel, both sides. This is what's called "Bare Cold Rolled" and it will patina (rust) naturally. However, a huge mistake I made was letting our pallet sit outside for two years before cutting the banding. Water wicked in between every panel and caused a black corrosion component that had to be wire brushed with a 7 in. grinder and I went thru 4 ea. 6 in. wire cone brushes. Did I say... both sides??!

Our repurposed lumber pile is dwindling fast. Makes me happy but a little nervy at the same time. 🤠
