Hey, have you met my neighbors? 😊

I’m always saying Tupper Lake is right in the middle of it all, so let me introduce you to a great town right next door.

Saranac Lake is a beautiful twenty-minute drive away and there’s a whole lot going on.

A few places worth knowing:

Adirondack Carousel for the kids.

River Trail Beerworks for food, beer and often tunes.

Adirondack Artists Guild, a co-op of fifteen local artists.

Ampersound, where I got my ukulele!

Nori’s Village Market for natural foods.

Origin Coffee Co. for caffeine.

Heartwood Studios for an adorable gift shop.

Watch for Northern Lights Choir shows. So good!

Grizle-T’s for a simple local bar and great late-night food.

Bitters & Bones for great food, drinks, friendly faces and that upstairs patio. 👍

Blue Line Sports for fishing and outdoor gear.

The Book Nook is my favorite little bookstore. Cute as can be.

The Downhill Grill is a favorite. Enchiladas, homemade chips, salsa and queso for me. Good bar and pool table too. It’s NOT a Mexican restaurant, that’s just what I always order. 😂

Early Dawn Confections for pastries and my favorite cheese bagel.

St. Regis Canoe Outfitters for paddling, rentals, gear and guided trips.

The Waterhole for live music.

The Rusty Nail is a famed local dive.

Hamlets to Huts for hiking books, maps, gifts and a much bigger mission.

Owl’s Nest for inexpensive, reliable pizza.

And yes, they even have an Aldi.

Elevate ADK is the closest dispensary, if that’s your cup of tea. When you get hungry you can refer back to my list here 😆

Outside? Hike Baker or Ampersand, paddle the Saranac Lakes, walk or bike the Adirondack Rail Trail, or play pickleball at Mt. Pisgahs beautiful outdoor courts.

Come winter, Pisgah has skiing and tubing too.

They’re also our nearest hospital. Five months here and I can twice-confirm they do a great job. 🤣🤷‍♂️

And the VA Clinic is the best I’ve ever been to!

Eat, drink, hike, paddle, shop, hear music and wander downtown. Saranac Lake has a whole lot going on and it’s right up the road from our perfect little spot in the middle of it all.

Pretty darn good neighbor to have!

Raquette River Outfitters is a classic place in Tupper.

Rob Frenette started the place in Tupper Lake in 1983, and he and Anne Fleck have now spent more than 40 years helping people get out on the water.

You can walk in and basically say, “I’ve got a few hours. Where should I go?” and they actually know. They’re happy to give advice, help plan a trip, and get you pointed in the right direction.

FYI you can go there and leave on a paddle from right on site if you wish - so it’s a simple activity to do, and a great deal!

I headed there to plan a paddle for my older brother and his wife, who are visiting.

Not my motel brother. I have more than one brother. This is the older one Mike, he’s a cool dude.

On the way, I stopped at the Wawbeek Quick Stop. I try to go there whenever I can because it’s truly local, and that’s my jam. The people who work there are always kind, and the owners are good Tupper Lake folks.

I was pumping gas and two guys were having a full conversation through the windows of their trucks.

Not a quick “hey, how ya doing?” either.

A real one.

They weren’t even next to each other. There was some hollering involved.

Then behind me at the Thrifty there was a HUGE bang that startled the hell out of me.

At this point I’m heading toward sensory overload because I’m also still thinking about the guy I had just passed at the light who was driving around with a canoe sideways on the bed of his truck.

Sideways.

Legit sticking WAY out.

Which immediately reminded me of lunch the other day when a friend was going to split a chimichanga with me and cut it lengthways instead of across the middle.

What??

Who does that? 🫎

It bothered me far more than it should have.

We laughed a lot 😁

She conceded the point eventually.

So now I’m pumping gas, listening to two guys holler across the parking lot, recovering from the mystery bang at the Thrifty, thinking about a sideways canoe, and thinking about the geometry of chimichanga division.

My truck is big and the pump cuts me off at $125, so this was not a quick amount of time and those guys are still “talking”

I went inside.

There was a guy at the counter buying four or five completely different kinds of energy drinks, a case of beer, and one of those little cracker, cheese and meat packs.

I sure wondered what he was about to be up to.

Another guy came in while I was browsing, walked directly to the beef jerky, picked up a bag, read the back of it, said “nah” out loud, put it back and walked straight out.

Meanwhile, a woman was explaining to somebody which road they should take because apparently “the other one is a mess after the beavers.”

I got my stuff and went back outside.

The two truck guys were STILL talking.

Finally one of them started to pull away

leaned out the window and yelled:

“Tell your mother I found her paddle!”

They didn’t seem like a canoe or kayak type of folks so that got me thinking 🤔

The other guy gave him a thumbs-up.

And that was it.

Then, while I’m standing there trying to absorb everything that had happened during one stop for gas, a guy walks past on the sidewalk with a cat on a leash.

Well that was interesting.

I got in my truck and headed to Raquette River Outfitters.

Rob is a graduate of the Atlantic Marine Boat Building School in Maine, which explains why this isn’t just a place to rent a canoe. The guy knows his stuff.

Anne’s background is pretty darn cool too. Before devoting herself fully to the business, she spent 15 years as a field research technician for Dartmouth College studying the health of Adirondack mountains and lakes.

So between the two of them, you’ve got one person who knows how to build the boat and another who spent 15 years studying the place you’re about to paddle it.

That is a fairly solid outfitting operation.

I went in and asked Anne to setup my brother and sister-in-law’s visit, and this is exactly why places like this are so darn valuable.

You don’t have to know the perfect route or have some grand expedition planned. You can just walk in, tell them what you’re looking for, and they’ll help you figure it out.

If you’re coming through Tupper Lake, stop in, talk to Rob and Anne, rent something, ask where you should go, and disappear out on the water for a while.

Not actually disappear.

Follow their directions. 🛶

My brother said they were so great and he and his misses love the trip 👍👍

Raquette River Outfitters is another darn good reason to come visit this dandy little town. Rent a canoe, kayak or paddle board and go on a trip, buy any of those too, or get some hiking or paddling gear 👍

Sunday I finally rode the Adirondack Railroad

I don’t know what took me so long.

I want to start with a quick THANK YOU to the nearly all volunteer crew that do this. The man at the “wheel” drives five hours here on weekends to do this for us. The conductor and all the crew on that train is volunteer ❤️

I knew I would enjoy it. I did not anticipate becoming a six-year-old boy trapped inside a 46-year-old man for most of the trip.

Or maybe I did 😂

There is just something about a train.

The bell. The horn. The sway of the cars. The old seats. The conductor walking through. Looking out the window and seeing the beautiful Adirondacks 🌲⛰️ from an entirely different angle.

It sincerely felt like going back in time.

Sometimes there was a beautiful view. Sometimes we were just rolling through the trees. I loved all of it. I felt like I could recline the seat and just nap away while somebody else worried about where we were going.

The actually riding was maybe better than the view.

An old train just feels good. I said to my pal I could do it every day like therapy!

On the way back I got to watch them move the locomotive from one end of the train to the other using the parallel tracks.

I am always curious. If people are doing something I don’t understand, I love to watch and learn until I understand it, or they ask me to leave. 😂

Then things really got exciting.

My friend and I got to ride up front in the locomotive! 🫎

OH MY.

I was so friggin delighted.

There was probably some jumping. A huge smile 😀

The engineer blew the horn and I was pretty much done for.

Trains are so badass.

They have all sorts of trips too. Scenic rides, longer excursions, trivia trains, beer and wine trips, fall foliage rides and rail bikes.

A train ride through the Adirondacks when the leaves are changing sounds ridiculously beautiful.

And one of the coolest parts is what we have right here in Tupper Lake.

The train tracks end at our station.

The The Adirondack Rail Trail, which Outside Magazine called “one of the best rail trails in the country” begins at our station.

And hey, while we’re bragging a little, this is the longest scenic railroad in the country.

Another pretty darn cool claim to fame for our little town. 😊

You can rent bikes right at the station now too. Utica visitors can bring their own!

Train one way. Bike the other.

Pretty sweet setup.

And when I was there Sunday, there were fresh vegetables, crafts and other goodies being sold right inside the station.

A train pulling in. Bikes heading out on the rail trail. Vegetables and crafts in the depot.

Jeepers, I nearly lost all sense of what year it was.

It just felt wonderfully small town.

I love this damn place.

We have something really special sitting right here, and it is one more reason Tupper Lake is such a great place to visit and such a great place to live.

So let’s embrace it, use it and support it.

Go ride the train.

I sincerely wish I had sooner.

It felt like the good old days.

Remember one day you’ll look back and these will be your good old days, so go ride a train, bike a trail and have all the fun you can!

Schedule for now:

The train arrives on Saturdays from Utica and Thendara around 1:00 PM. Passengers are here for about an hour and a half before returning.

On Sundays, there are currently two round trips from Tupper Lake Station to Sabattis, departing at noon and 2:00 PM.

Beginning September 15th, there will also be a Sunday arrival from Thendara at 11:00 AM. Those passengers will have a 4.5-hour layover, and there will be a shuttle available to take them around town.

They’re also hoping to add more outbound trips from Tupper Lake Station soon.

Saturday, September 19th: Beer and Wine Train!

I hope you’re all doing super! It’s a beautiful day in the Adirondacks. Northwood is full of great guests and life is good.

I’m off to Lake Placid this evening. The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation, a wonderful organization, is having its summer party, and some great folks were kind enough to invite me to join them at their table ❤️

I bet it’ll be a sweet time. Friends. Making some new friends. Helping birds. Good food. Good tunes. Awesome.

Local Tupper guys Sometimes Jeff will be playing, so there’s a very solid chance I’ll be doing some cutting of the rug!

Last night I got a message from artist Tarryl Gabel asking if she could park at the motel and paint our sign.

Of course.

When I got home, there she was by the highway, sitting in her van with a light on, using her steering wheel as an easel and painting our old neon sign at night.

Tarryl is up from the Hudson Valley for the Adirondack Plein Air Festival, which is based out of our wonderful neighbor town Saranac Lake with 40 selected artists painting around the area this week.

I visited with her for a bit, then left her to work. On the way back I saw a fire at one of the cabins and joined a very nice couple I had met earlier.

Eventually the mysterious van came up.

“What is she doing out there?”

“She’s painting our sign.”

“She’s painting your sign?”

“Yes.”

“At night?”

“Yes.”

“Why would she want to paint your sign?”

“Because it’s an awesome sign.”

“Yes, I know. But why is she PAINTING it?”

“Because she likes it.”

“At night?”

“Yes. She wants to paint it with the lights on.”

“Wouldn’t it be easier in the daytime?”

“Well yes, but then the lights aren’t on.”

Now she looks confused.

So I’m confused.

“Why would she paint your sign?”

“BECAUSE IT LOOKS COOL.”

“Yes, I KNOW it looks cool!”

We are now just staring at each other.

Finally her husband says:

“She’s making a picture of the sign.”

OOOOHHHH.

She thought I meant Tarryl was literally out there PAINTING THE SIGN

All my fault, I often confuse people, but we had a good laugh 😆

Meanwhile I had been confidently reassuring her for five minutes:

“Yes. She’s painting our sign.” 😂

Tarryl and I visited more this morning and she did some more work. What a way to start my day 😊

The festival itself is pretty nifty. Artists are painting around the Adirondacks all week.

Saturday there’s a Quick Draw, sounds way cool, in downtown Saranac Lake where they get two hours to finish a painting in public.

There’s also a show and sale at Town Hall there 10-5 Saturday where you can buy work from the week.

I love that Tarryl looked at our old sign and thought, I want to paint that 🎨❤️

That seemed worth sharing.

The classic sound of an old screen door is wonderful, and this one has a trick 😊

Decades of a strong old door, a spring you could build a catapult out of, and some backwards install that happened before I was alive. All worn into perfection. Sweet.

Slow mo is pretty cool. I should have included it. I can’t do two screen door posts in a row though. That would be odd.

This is beautiful in so many ways if you choose to see it ❤️

Feel free to visit the door in Tupper Lake NY - it’s a great door and a great town.

Some weekend activities!

The Adirondack Sky Center and Observatory is open tonight, Friday, August 14th, at 9:00

If you haven’t been, go look through some enormous telescope at things that are basically unfathomably far away while someone way smarter than me explains what you’re actually seeing.

The Flea Market and craft sale starts today at 2:00 it goes through Sunday at the waterfront park!

Also Tupper Arts has a show at The Wild Center tonight at 7:00 I think I am gonna make it, I have heard it’s great. Scope info on their page!

Raquette River Brewing has music tonight starting at 5:00. Go eat some good food truck grub and have a listen on that patio, it should be a great day for it.

You can now rent bikes at the Train Station to ride the Adirondack Rail Trail - the one Outside Magazine called one of the top rail trails in the country! 🚲

Karaoke starts at P-2's Irish Pub at 6:00!

The new Spider Man is at the movie theater at 7pm, it’s only only eight bucks, classic.

Another stop - I finally went to the Tupper Lake History Museum. 10-4 Tuesday to Saturday the rest of August then I’m not sure, so get over there!

The folks there have done such a great job to preserve the history.

It makes zero sense I didn’t go for so long, because I love this town and I love its stories. I’ve sat with longtime locals and heard everything from “that used to be a hotel” to “don’t repeat that part” to “you wouldn’t believe what used to be there.” I’ve read the articles, seen the old photos, soaked it all in secondhand.

And the whole time there was just a building full of it sitting right there. Oops.

Well. I was missing out.

That museum is fantastic. Old photos, artifacts, little pieces of everyday life from Tupper Lake’s past all laid out in a way that actually makes you feel it. You can picture the town changing right in front of you.

If you live here and haven’t been, go give them 30 minutes. If you’re visiting, absolutely stop in. You’ll leave liking Tupper Lake even more than you already do!

The Sky Center got me thinking about those “shooting stars” we were all watching the other night.

First of all, even through the clouds? Still pretty awesome.

Second of all I learned I’ve had it wrong my whole life.

They’re not stars. Not even close. I didn’t think they were but I guess it thought they were sweet big something blasting through far space. Nope.

What we’re actually seeing is Earth running into a stream of dust and tiny rock bits left behind by Comet Swift–Tuttle. These pieces are usually no bigger than a grain of sand, but here’s the crazy part, a lot of that material is ancient.

Some of it has been drifting through space since Swift–Tuttle last passed through the inner solar system in 1992, and some of the comet’s original material is over 4.5 billion years old basically leftover building blocks from when the solar system itself was forming.

We are watching 4.5 billion year old space sand catch fire. Dope.

It hits our atmosphere at about 37 miles per second, which burns it up instantly, and makes those bright streaks we call meteors.

They’re just space sand grains and gravel. How the heck do they look so bright and big?

That whole show is the Perseid meteor shower, and it happens every year around mid-August when Earth passes through the comet’s debris trail.

Swift–Tuttle itself is a big icy comet about 16 miles wide, and it only swings by the Sun once every 133 years. Last time it was near us was 1992, and it won’t be back until 2126.

So basically: a comet left a cosmic mess in space, some of it literally older than Earth itself, Earth drives up through it every year, and we all go outside like “wow, look at that.”

I think it’s still just as awesome.

Tupper Lake, you’re awesome too!

You have all this nature, great town, great people, great eats and drinks and you then give me a place huge magazines and newspapers call one one of the best spots to stare up at flaming space sand 🔥

Go to the observatory 🔭

Go to the museum 🏫
