GO GIVE BLOOD TODAY IN TUPPER

I’ve been thinking I’d like to get more involved in the community, but I’d also really like to lie down.

You can see my predicament. Maybe you can relate.

Everybody’s always telling you to rise up. Stand up. Get out there and make a difference.

The blood drive says, “Come on in. We’ve got a recliner.”

Well, s**t. Let’s hear these people out.

It’s basically kindergarten nap time for adults. You lie down, take it easy, somebody checks on you, and when you’re done, you get a snack.

Granted, they stick a needle in you. Bit of a departure from kindergarten.

But normally when I lie down in the middle of the day, I’m “avoiding my responsibilities.” Here, they’re delighted. Same position. Entirely different reputation.

It’s like how I once talked about seeing somebody briskly walking down the highway. Workout clothes? Good for you. Jeans and a dress shirt? You need a ride, buddy?

Same legs. Same road. Suddenly I’m concerned.

I think there’s a comparison in there somewhere. Anyway, the blood drive.

Nobody hands you a rake. Nobody asks if you own a truck. Nobody says, “Since you’re tall, could you help us hang this?”

They specifically want you to stay put.

Finally. A volunteer opportunity that recognizes my desire to be useful and my desire to just take ’er easy sometimes.

No big speech. No spotlight. Just a bunch of grown adults having a supervised lie-down and doing something good 🙂

Meanwhile, your blood gets to go out and have a life. I could be home in sweatpants while mine is kayaking with a guy named Tim or having a drink with Stuart or running up a mountain with Rose.

Good for it. We don’t both need to be sitting around.

Go give blood if you’re able. Any time any where you are, they need it.

Somewhere, somebody gets more time with the people they love because you showed up and took it easy for a bit. 🥱

Happy Monday!!

I had an awesome time at the Nordic Combined USA Nationals in Lake Placid this past weekend!

The athletes were so great to meet. Young people doing incredible things and older folks still out there absolutely crushing it.

I’ve jumped out of airplanes, roped out of helicopters, even parachuted out of a damn hot air balloon once.

I stood at the observation platform at the top of that ramp, looked down and said, “Oh, f**k that.” 😂

I sure love cheering and watching our people go to work though!

There’s so damn much going on around here that I somehow didn’t even know this was happening! My friend Helen Demong from Saranac Lake invited me to the meet and greet to support the sport and her grandson, Liam.

Liam Demong, 15, son of local legend and Olympic gold medalist Billy Demong, slayed Sunday! After the jumping he was in SECOND! Then finished fourth after a damn 10K cross-country race!

FIFTEEN. How amazing is that?!

I’m not sure who the jumpers are in my videos, but they’re all badass. I filmed so much I couldn’t begin to sort it all out.

Congrats to everybody who participated 👍

It was so awesome meeting all of you. Keep flying ⛷️

Hey Tupper Lake,

I know I seem pretty confident.

Comfortable in my own skin.

Like I don’t care much what anybody thinks.

And maybe that’s mostly true now.

But I’ve been a lot of places in my life.

A LOT of places.

And I don’t think any place has ever made me feel as okay just being me as you have.

Not impressive.

Not polished.

Not trying to be cool.

Just me.

You have made me feel supported.

Accepted.

Included.

Like I’m actually part of something.

And that is a pretty incredible gift to give somebody.

I can be ridiculous here.

I can dance badly.

I can say what I think.

I can love people loudly.

I can sing 500 Miles at karaoke at P-2's Irish Pub even though I’m lousy at it 😁

And somehow I know you all are just going to laugh, sing along, bust my balls a little and love me anyway.

Do you know how badass that is?

To make somebody feel that safe being completely themselves?

That’s what you’ve done for me.

This little town has changed me.

You’ve made me less guarded.

More open.

More grateful.

More willing to look stupid.

More willing to just enjoy the hell out of being alive.

So if you see me singing karaoke, dancing around town, talking to strangers, making dumb videos or generally carrying on like an idiot 🤷‍♂️

A lot of that is your fault.

You made me feel like it was okay.

Thank you, Tupper Lake.

From the high school kids to the town elders, I mean it. All of you have been so good to me.

And please keep doing what you’re doing. Keep supporting me. Keep letting me be part of this place.

Because for what it’s worth, all of you are helping one guy truly live a life that sometimes feels too good to be true.

And maybe I’m the walking, singing, badly dancing example of why people need to come here.

Not because Tupper Lake will turn you into somebody different.

Because this place makes you feel pretty damn good about being exactly who you already are.

And maybe that’s because Tupper Lake itself seems to have absolutely no interest in being anything other than exactly what it is.

How wonderful is that?

Thank you for just being you, and for letting me be me.

The Tupper Lake Plein Air Festival is happening right now, and I flippin love it!

Two of the artists are staying here with me, and a few have already painted the cabins or the sign 😊

Artists are all over town painting outside. Plein air basically means go outside and paint. Lakes. Trees. Old buildings. Roadsides. Cabins. Random little corners of Tupper.

That’s one of my favorite things about art. You get to see someone else’s view.

An old building becomes beautiful. A patch of woods becomes something more. A photograph can somehow show somebody’s whole personality.

One of the paintings this week even has the colorful birdhouses at The Wild Center in it, which I love even more because those birdhouses were made by local kids. Art inside art 🤔

These folks are really talented.

I tried a couple masterpieces of my own, mostly as evidence that art does not require talent as others may perceive it 😁

Paint something. Draw something. Take pictures. Build weird s**t. Make music. Dance. Whatever floats your boat. You do not have to be great at something to enjoy making or doing it.

If you see the plein air artists around town, say hello and visit with them for a minute. Thank them too, for sharing their talent and showing our home in such a beautiful way.

Then go see all the finished work and support Tupper Arts which is such a great damn thing to have in our little town.

OkTupperfest is tomorrow, Saturday 9/26 from 12-4

Park at the baseball field or waterfront park and you can walk over 👍

Flanders Park. Tupper Lake. Fall. B**r. Food. Music. A bunch of people milling around.

I just stopped by the setup and it looks like a lot of fun for kids, random games under the trees and hayrides and grass to just run around on! Small town nostalgia.

It’s FREE to come in, listen to music, wander through 30+ vendors and just enjoy the day.

If you want to drink, it’s $30. You get a glass mug and can sample away from seven breweries/cideries:

You can bring chairs - which would make an ideal people watching sitting for sure! Find shade and observe humans, always entertaining!

There will be dogs there, which I love.

When I was young, we were going to a family friends once and my mother said they were real dog people. When I heard that I was so excited because I was expecting to meet real dog people - like they were part dog part human - they were just people who liked dogs and had several.

I was upset for several days that she “lied to me”

Anyway if you see me please say hello!

Come to town early and pop in for a coffee, visit a shop, grab a bite or pre-party at the Irish Pub or brewery ☺️

Stay after for dinner or drinks around town!

I just read that a sawmill here once held the world record for the most lumber cut in a single day.

Well, obviously I couldn’t just learn that one thing and move on with my life like a normal person.

Down the rabbit hole I went.

New York’s first state tree nursery was in Tupper Lake 🌲

Okay. Apparently we were VERY into trees.

So what were we doing with all that wood?

The OWD Factory, which is currently being renovated to 80 residences and commercial space, made:

Bowling pins.

Clothespins.

Tongue depressors 😛

Those little wooden ice cream spoons. 500 million a year!

Flooring.

An early version of the SPORK. Yep. Tupper Lake was apparently out here helping solve the spoon/fork crisis.

Just absolute mountains of random American life rolling out of this little Adirondack town.

And here’s the part that is really cool to think about:

There’s a damn good chance that if you grew up anywhere in America, you have physically interacted with Tupper Lake.

Maybe you bowled with us.

Maybe you ate ice cream with us.

Maybe some doctor pinned your tongue down with us while you sat there going “ahhhhh.”

Maybe your grandma hung underwear in the backyard with us 🧺

Who knows.

Popsicle sticks. Sporks. Ice cream spoons. Tongue depressors. If you’re over 30, the real math says Tupper Lake has probably been in your mouth. Classic. 😮😉

THEN you zoom out.

Because this little town sits inside the six-million-acre Adirondack Park. That’s bigger than some states!

Matter of fact it’s bigger than three states combined!

We have enough rivers and streams that if you laid them end to end, they’d circle the entire Earth and still have about 5,000 miles left over.

Our highest mountain is higher than the highest point in 30 states.

We have more than 3,000 lakes.

Visit a different one every single day and you’ll still be at it more than EIGHT YEARS from now.

How big is a place that holds all this?

Get ready for this brain crusher…every human ON EARTH could stand within the boundaries of The Adirondacks and put their arms out and spin around and not touch!

This place is just full of fascination!

Either this sort of science-facty stuff is blowing me away, or the sheer beauty, or the damn kindness and amusement of the people is.

I love it here. I’m so glad I accidentally found a kick-ass old motel.
