Lost Horse Homes draws its name from the historic Lost Horse Mine trail in Joshua Tree National Park. 🌵✨ For those who love their hikes steeped in history, read on and save this for your next adventure! 👇

Discover the Lost Horse Mine, a site that produced over 10,000 ounces of gold and 16,000 ounces of silver from 1894 to 1931. This trail is a 4-mile round trip with 550 feet of elevation gain, offering a journey through western history with tales of cowboys, miners, and the allure of gold.

For those seeking a longer trek, the 6.2-mile Lost Horse Loop with 1292 feet of elevation gain promises stunning views, historical remnants, and some of the best Joshua trees in the park. Most hikers prefer the clockwise route for a rewarding adventure. 🌄🏞️

The Cholla Cactus 🌵🌸

The Cholla Cactus Garden is a 0.2-mile loop trail in Twentynine Palms. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 4 min to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, hiking, and walking. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime, but especially at sunrise and sunset when you can see the cacti almost like glowing ✨

Debate. Is. Over.

We will be taking no further questions at this time.

Before you ghost us, let us say this, while visiting public lands, practice “ghost travel” – aka, Leave No Trace.

👻 Dispose of waste properly. You ever seen a ghost litter banana peels, tissues, or cigarette butts? No, because they put it in the garbage.

😲 Leave what you find, whether it’s a rock, flower, or artifact. The only thing a ghost takes is your breath away.

🦬 Respect wildlife. You ever seen a ghost feeding trail mix to a squirrel or standing ten feet from a bison? No, they have too much respect for people’s spirit animals.

💚 Minimize your impact. There’s a reason why this picture is the first time you’ve seen concrete evidence of a ghost. It’s because they are masters at Leave No Trace. Help conserve your public lands by minimizing your footprint and utilizing sustainable outdoor practices.

“You ever feel prickly things on the back of your neck?”— The Sixth Sense

Strange, otherworldly, and bizarre, the Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) makes the perfect spooky plant for October. With twisted branches and spiky spines, these trees seem to grow randomly from all sides with no reason or rhyme. But, there is actually a method to their madness.

Joshua trees branch using something called a “dichotomous system.” When a flower grows and dies at the end of a Joshua tree’s stalk, branches split off and extend from the end. These new growths will stretch out and point to wherever they can find the strongest source of sunlight. They’ll continue to grow until those stalks flower and more branches sprout from there!

Each branch of the Joshua tree forms dense clusters of leaves that are dagger-like in shape. This pointed shape helps funnel rainwater from the spiky tips down to the trunks during storms. The trunks will absorb the water and store it for long periods of time during the summer.

You may notice some Joshua trees grow like straight stalks; these trees have never bloomed– which is why they are branchless!
