Allegory Inn

Allegory Inn Peaceful, owner-operated inn in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Seven private guest rooms with private baths, Mount Washington views and direct trail access.

Historic 1830 property under new ownership since December 2024. Stay Peaceful. Explore Easily. We fell in love with New Hampshire’s White Mountains—especially Twin Mountain—and spent five years searching for the right opportunity to move here, build a business and become part of the community. On December 10, 2024, that dream became a reality when we purchased Allegory Inn. We relocated from Cape

Cod and now live in the private innkeepers’ quarters while operating the inn ourselves. Living on-site allows us to give the property and our guests the personal attention they deserve. As a small, owner-operated inn, our highest priority is providing a clean, comfortable and welcoming place where every guest can relax and feel at home. Nathan has lived on Cape Cod for most of his life. Christine grew up near the New Hampshire border in Lowell and Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, before spending nine years on the Cape. Together, we have a blended family of six sons and our gentle-giant Daniff, Bailey. Bailey lives with us in our private area and does not enter the inn’s guest spaces, although you may occasionally see her enjoying the yard. Since taking ownership, we have been thoughtfully cleaning, updating and refreshing this historic 1830 property while preserving the character that makes it special. Allegory Inn offers seven private, non-smoking guest rooms, each with a private bathroom, complimentary Wi-Fi and comfortable bedding. Guests can also enjoy our inviting shared spaces, including the living room, library, sunroom and coffee bar and kitchenette. Although we do not serve breakfast, we provide complimentary coffee, tea, hot chocolate and a rotating selection of convenient light items. The kitchenette includes a dual Keurig for K-Cups or a full pot of coffee, a kettle, French press, microwave, toaster oven, refrigerator, dishes, glasses and utensils. Perfectly positioned in the heart of the White Mountains, Allegory Inn offers convenient access to Mount Washington, Bretton Woods, the Cog Railway, Franconia Notch, Crawford Notch, hiking trails, waterfalls, skiing and direct snowmobile access to Corridor 11. We look forward to welcoming you and helping make your White Mountains stay memorable. Christine & Nathan Holman

☀️ A Sunday Well Spent

This photograph from 1949 perfectly captures the slower pace of life at King's Cottage.

Guests gathered on the lawn, reading the Sunday paper, enjoying conversations with family, and soaking in the fresh mountain air.

No phones.
No notifications.
No endless schedules.

Just good company, beautiful scenery, and time together.

Nearly 80 years later, many guests tell us that's exactly what they come to Allegory Inn to find—a place to unplug, unwind, and reconnect.

Sometimes the best vacations are the simplest ones.

Thank you again to Marie Stone Gardiner for preserving this incredible glimpse into the past.

📖 If you could spend one afternoon in 1949 at King's Cottage, what would you be doing?

Some things change.
Some traditions never do.

Thank you again to Marie Stone Gardiner for preserving this wonderful piece of history.

Have you ever stayed somewhere that immediately felt like home?

🏡 Things We've Learned as Innkeepers...

One of the best surprises?

Some guests leave as friends.

Those conversations on the porch, around the firepit, or over morning coffee are some of our favorite parts of innkeeping. ❤️

🎶 Music in the Mountains... 1937 🎶

Imagine arriving at King's Cottage in the summer of 1937 and being greeted by the sound of an organ grinder playing outside the front porch.

This wonderful photograph captures visitors gathered near the King's Cottage sign while the organ grinder entertained guests arriving for their White Mountains vacation. Moments like these remind us that travel has always been about more than just the destination—it's about the experiences, the people you meet, and the memories you take home.

Nearly a century later, we're honored to continue welcoming travelers to this same historic property, now known as Allegory Inn. While the organ grinder may be gone, the spirit of hospitality and gathering in the mountains lives on.

A heartfelt thank you to Marie Stone Gardiner for preserving and sharing these remarkable photographs, allowing us to celebrate the rich history of this special place.

💚 If you could step back in time for one day at King's Cottage, what would you want to experience first?

Every day starts with a carefully planned to-do list...

🏡 **Meet Your Innkeepers — Christine & Nathan!**

One thing we want guests to know about The Allegory Inn: **self check-in does not mean you are on your own!**

We offer self check-in because it is convenient. You can arrive on your schedule, enter with your personal door code, and settle in without waiting at a front desk.

But we are very much here! 😊 We are a small, owner-operated historic inn, and we live right on-site.

Need help with something? Text or call us. Looking for a hiking trail, restaurant, waterfall, or something fun to do? Ask us! Feel like chatting around the fire? Come join us. 🔥 Prefer to relax and enjoy your getaway privately? That is perfectly fine too.

We love giving our guests the best of both worlds: **the freedom and convenience of self check-in with friendly, personal hospitality whenever you want or need it.**

And since we live here in the White Mountains too, we are always exploring and finding new places to recommend. 🏔️🥾

**Stay Peaceful. Explore Easily.**

We recently had dinner at the new Rooted On Main in downtown Littleton, and everything was fantastic! 🍽️🍸

From the moment we arrived, everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious, the portions were generous, and the cocktails were creative and beautifully made.

We enjoyed the flaming Greek Saganaki with warm garlic pita dippers, the Rooted Burger made with seasoned turkey, and the Ribeye Au Poivre with mashed potatoes and vegetables. Everything was cooked beautifully and full of flavor.

The drinks were just as impressive! We tried a strawberry basil margarita, the smoky Dragon’s Breath, and an Espresso Martini. Somehow, we still found room for the warm brownie with vanilla ice cream—and poured the Rooted Decadence espresso cocktail over the top. It was every bit as amazing as it sounds! 😍

Rooted On Main is also located right next door to Jax Jr. Cinemas, making it perfect for a Littleton date night—dinner, cocktails, dessert, and a movie all in one convenient spot! 🍿🎬

We love discovering local restaurants and activities that we can confidently recommend to our Allegory Inn guests. Rooted On Main is a wonderful new addition to downtown Littleton, and the people behind it could not have been nicer.

If you have not visited yet, go give them a try and help support this fantastic new local business. We are already looking forward to going back! ❤️

👶 Every Tradition Begins Somewhere

In 1929, a young girl named Marie Stone Gardiner visited King's Cottage for the very first time with her parents and sister.

According to Marie, even her baby carriage was stored in the barn so it would be waiting for next year's visit.

Imagine that.

Families didn't just visit once—they returned year after year, creating traditions that lasted generations.

Today we're privileged to continue welcoming families, hikers, couples, and adventurers to this same historic property, helping create new memories nearly 100 years later.

Thank you, Marie, for preserving these remarkable photographs and stories.

Have your family vacations become traditions too?

Different faces.
Different generations.
The same beautiful White Mountains.

It's one of our favorite reminders that while buildings age, traditions live on.

Thank you to Marie Stone Gardiner for helping preserve these memories.

🇺🇸 This September, New Hampshire will come together to mark the 25th anniversary of September 11.

From September 9–12, two pillars of light will rise above Mount Washington in remembrance of the lives lost, the first responders who answered the call, and the veterans who continue to serve our communities.

Here at Allegory Inn, we can see Mount Washington from our property, making this meaningful tribute feel especially close to home. On clear nights, the beams are expected to be visible from communities throughout New Hampshire and beyond.

We still have a few rooms available for those who would like to stay nearby and experience this powerful tribute in the White Mountains.
