…because adults love to ask the question…. “What do you do?” Ps… I’m not one of those adults… but here’s my answer for today…
I walk outside and look at my flowers. I notice the bees and critters buzzing and bouncing. I load up the good vacuum from my house along with two empty vases from my basement & head over to the 1848… an old house that we turned into a bnb in our small town located in the Laurel Highlands in Pennsylvania. I spend time cleaning and turning over a space that a guest has just checked out of. I meticulously put everything back into its place. I turn on the lamps, no overhead lights in preparation for making a warm , cozy, and inviting space to welcome new guests. I drive to a locally owned eatery that makes amazing baked goods and buy a few slices of pie to take back to have them waiting for my guests to enjoy. I go downstairs where my friend owns her teahouse and she hands me freshly made teabags to also share. I take my old vases that I inherited from my Gram and fill them with the flowers I planted outside…. Who doesn’t love fresh flowers? I romanticize the EF out of this life of mine. Because….. I only get one. ☮️ & ❤️.

Revitalize, or Die. Sending a virtual high five, yet again. Thank you for your words. “Love the one you’re with.”

Every city obsesses about outsiders.

Tourists. New businesses. Outside investment. The next big employer. The national chain that will finally put them on the map.

Meanwhile the people who already live there, who already pay taxes, who already chose this place and are raising their kids here, get nothing.

It’s backwards.

Residents don’t need much. They want to be able to take a walk without being mowed down by a car. They want safe places for their kids to play. They want a friend on the block and a coffee shop worth lingering in. They want a downtown that makes them feel something when they walk through it.

They want to feel proud of where they live.

That pride isn’t a soft or secondary goal. It’s the foundation of everything else. Proud residents maintain their properties. They support local businesses. They show their town off to friends and family. They fight for their community when it matters. They stay.

And when people stay, when they’re genuinely connected to and proud of the place they call home, that is when the real investment happens. Not because someone chased it, but because they built something worth being part of.

Stop chasing outsiders.

Take care of the people already here and give them something to feel good about.

In the immortal word of Stephen Stills, “Love the one you’re with.”

Do you miss having a movie theatre in Uniontown...me too...but...did you know that our beautiful State Theatre Center for the Arts offers movie days!? The film series for this upcoming season has been geared towards all... starting on August 28 with "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Happy Gilmore" in September...the list goes on... Check it out and let's gather up our friends to enjoy a classic! Anyone up for making these a theme night out??? Where are my whimsy people at?!
