There's a Songbird That Only Builds Its Nest in Texas
Not most of Texas. Just the Hill Country. The golden-cheeked warbler is endangered and picky. It needs mature Ashe juniper bark to weave its nest. It needs clear creeks and canyon shade.
And it just got 1,720 acres of prime habitat.
Texas acquired the land for Bear Creek State Park in Uvalde County. The new park sits less than a mile from Garner State Park along the Frio River. That's canyon country. Limestone walls. Cypress shade. Cold water running over rock.
The warbler has been losing this exact habitat to development and fragmentation for decades. One thousand seven hundred twenty acres isn't a full recovery. But it's a park now. Protected. Public. Connected to existing habitat along one of the cleanest rivers in the state.
The bird doesn't know it got a win. It just knows the junipers are still standing and the creek still runs. That's enough for a song.
