The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has announced that the 2026 private recreational and state charter Red Snapper season will open Friday, May 1, 2026.
Begins May 1 and runs 7 days a week
4 fish per person
16 inches total length
Private recreational anglers can fish for Red Snapper in both state and federal waters, while state charter vessels may fish within Louisianaโs state waters (within 9 nautical miles).

โThanks to our LA Creel program, last year, Louisiana anglers experienced a historical Red Snapper season - fishing for a total of 200 days. This is what active management is all about, and we are so excited to bring back another successful Red Snapper season to our sportsmen this year.โ
The season will remain open until recreational landings approach Louisianaโs 2026 allocation of 882,439 pounds, monitored weekly through the LA Creel program.
Recreational anglers must have a Louisiana Basic Fishing License, Saltwater License, and a free Recreational Offshore Landing Permit (ROLP).
Anglers on paid charter trips do not need an ROLP (charter captains do).
Offshore anglers that fish for or posses Gulf Reef fish in Gulf of American federal waters must have non-stainless steel circle hooks, a dehooking device, and a descending device or venting tool onboard. More information here (p. 19): https://buff.ly/0Gpybj0
Certain rules apply to state for-hire charter vessels and federal for-hire charter vessels. Captains and anglers should refer to the full press release for complete details and regulations: https://buff.ly/pmKIvKE

LDWF biologists rely on LA Creel dockside and phone/email surveys to track harvest. Participation is voluntary but strongly encouraged. The accuracy and reliability of harvest estimates depend on angler participation in LA Creel, so LDWF needs as many anglers as possible to complete both dockside and phone/email surveys.
LA Creel is the active management method LDF used to estimate recreational and state-charter harvest of fish species landed in Louisiana, with the goal of providing anglers with increased fishing opportunities.
We encourage anglers to use a descending device to reduce barotrauma while fishing for Red Snapper and other reef fish. This helps to return fish to a survivable depth before being released. Please see the LDWF barotrauma website for more information: LDWF barotrauma website
