Drive south out of New Orleans on Highway 23 for about two hours and the road simply stops. That is Venice 🚢

They call it the end of the world, and the sign is not a joke. It is the last community on the Mississippi River you can reach by car. Past it there is nothing but marsh, water, and the passes running out into the Gulf. What is there is a working harbor, shrimp trawlers, crew boats running out to the offshore rigs, and some of the best sport fishing water anywhere in the country.

It is also a place that keeps having to decide whether to exist. Katrina took nearly all of it. So did storms before and after. Every time, some of the people came back and rebuilt on ground that everybody knows is losing to the Gulf a little more each year. Plaquemines Parish is disappearing faster than almost any land on earth 🌊

The people who stay are not naive about it. They know exactly what the water is doing. They stay anyway.
