Compensation paid in the form of waves, smiles, a great sense of community and all the sunshine you can fit in your pockets. And if you find a stick or twig that really appeals to you, you're welcome to take it as a keepsake. Thanks to each and all for supporting your friendly local county park!

Nothing short of amazing! The park will re-open Friday at noon to full public use (except the wooded trails still closed). Our little park is beaten and bruised but we're back in the saddle. Public is welcome to stop out and help pick up twigs and sticks; just put them in a pile and they'll get burned. Rootball holes will be filled and the work on the playground rebuild can re-start. Thanks everyone for your patience and a round of applause for everyone from Clay County and SDGFP who came out and got the hard work done!

Storm pics from cleanup after 9/1/2026. AI summaries say that there was radar-indicated rotation at one time, but a local newspaper reported findings that showed straight-line winds caused most property and tree damage in and around Vermillion. "Often confused with tornadoes, due to their ability to damage property, straight-line winds shoot downward at high speeds, spreading outwards when they reach the ground, sometimes reaching as much as 100 mph." Either way, it caused quite a mess.

(Friday update: Park is re-opening today at noon.)Thursday morning update: Per SD GFP and Clay County Park, main campground is CLOSED to people not camping. Workers, heavy equipment and some still- leaning trees make extra traffic hazardous. Drive thru traffic was a safety concern yesterday! We do hope to have campground open to all again maybe later today or Saturday if all goes well. Also: all wooded trails are closed indefinitely. RESERVATIONS have been closed to any additional campers and we are not at this time accepting "walk ins". We will be able to accommodate those with standing reservations. We are triaging the entire park and additional damage exists in other areas. CCP is so grateful no one was injured and have enormous thanks to Clay County Highway Dept. and SD GFP for their invaluable help!Pictures coming shortly; additional updates as situation evolves.

Due to extensive storm damage and heavy equipment onsite, please consider main campground closed to the public until Friday. We are trying to accommodate campers and should be able to be open for business for the weekend. ALL WOODED TRAILS CLOSED until at least Thursday afternoon, maybe Friday. Heartfelt thanks to park staff and our partners at Clay County and SD GFP for diverting equipment/resources to help!

CCP sustained considerable tree damage in last night's storm. Please be aware some trails and regular access points may be blocked in wooded areas of the park. Work crews and heavy equipment are on the way, please avoid any traffic into campground today. We're working to accommodate anyone with camping reservations. Thank you.

This little fella (or lady) is going to grow up to be a Monarch butterfly and is seen here nibbling on milkweed in CCP's 31-acre Prairie Restoration area. We're supporting pollinators and native habitat in this area; some estimates say an area of native prairie this size could support around 2,200 new Monarchs per season. Late August and early September are peak times for their fall migration... what a great spot for a fall picnic or butterfly hike! Watch for signage with more information at the park soon. Missouri River paddlers: Clay County Park (Vermillion, SD) would like your feedback on potentially adding 2-3 tent sites near the river so paddlers can camp close to their boats and gear. Sites would be reserved for paddlers, have fire pits and picnic tables, and would have a pit toilet and the scenic overlook/ picnic shelter nearby. Whether for camping convenience or a better "bad weather take-out" option, would there be interest from the paddling community? Thanks in advance for your input. Paddle on....
