Such rich history in Vicksburg. I learn something new everyday and always from Charles Pendleton at the Vicksburg Civil War Museum!
Vicksburg National Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 18,000 American veterans. Each one has a story. Today, we remember Nelson A. Anderson. Born around 1845 in Savannah, Georgia, Anderson enlisted in 1863 in Company D, 2nd United States Colored Light Artillery. He served through the Civil War and was mustered out in 1865.
After the war, he became a leader in Vicksburg. He was a charter member of St. Maryโs Episcopal Church and served as a City Alderman, Jailor, and chairman of the Warren County Republican Executive Committee. He continued his service as Commander of R.B. Elliot Post #17 of the Grand Army of the Republic and remained active in civic life.
Anderson passed away in 1906 and is buried at Vicksburg National Cemetery.
