Attention Campground Members:
Here are the guidelines for building your boat for the upcoming regatta on July 18th, allowing you to start your construction process. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Eric Nelson.
📦 Campground Cardboard Boat Regatta:
Official Rules📦
Build it, race it, try to stay afloat!
I. Construction Materials
To keep the playing field level and the water clean, only the following materials are permitted:
The Hull: Corrugated cardboard only. High-density appliance boxes (refrigerators, washers) are recommended.
Adhesive: Duct tape may be used on seams and joints only. Tape on SEAMS ONLY. No "mummifying" the hull.
NO WATERPROOFING: The use of paint, varnish, wax, tar, "Flex Seal," or plastic wrapping is strictly prohibited. Zero tolerance for Flex-Seal, wood, or foam. The cardboard must be raw and exposed to the elements. No paint below the water line!
No "Illegal" Reinforcements: No wood, metal, plastic, Styrofoam, or fiberglass. No staples, nails, or screws.
$20 registration fee for all boats. This puts up to 2 people in your boat. $10 per person for any additional paddlers (No limit except boat size). All proceeds will be donated to the Campground Activities Fund.
II. Design & Safety
Visibility: The passenger area must be open. No "enclosed" cabins that could trap a person if the boat capsizes.
Propulsion: Boats must be moved by human power using arms or paddles. Regular paddles are allowed.
PFDs Required: Every person on a boat must wear a Coast-Guard approved Life Jacket (PFD) at all times while in the water.
Shoes: We recommend wearing water shoes to protect your feet from the lake/pond floor.
III. The Main Categories & Awards
🏆 The Speed Demon: The first boat to cross the finish line (or the one that makes it the furthest before sinking).
🏆 The Showstopper: Best costume and boat theme. We want to see creativity!
🏆 The Titanic Award: The most dramatic, spectacular, and hilarious sinking caught on camera.
IV. Race Day Logistics
Check-In: All boats must be presented at the Registration Table at least 30 minutes before the race for a "Material Inspection."
The Launch: One team member is recommended to stay on shore to help push off.
Clean-Up: Requirement: Once your boat sinks or finishes the race, the team is responsible for hauling all soggy cardboard out of the water and straight to the designated dumpster. Leave no trace!
Pro-Tip for Campers:
Since no waterproofing is allowed, your boat is on a "ticking clock" the moment it touches the water. Build with multiple layers of cardboard to slow down the saturation process! Maximum thickness of 1.5 inches on your layers!
Build your boat early so it’s ready on race day (July 18) 2 weeks after the July 4 festivities!
