Did you know the Big Island of Hawai’i is considered one of the best places on the planet to stargaze? Here’s why…

It’s not just the clear tropical air—it’s the unique position on the globe! Because we are located at approximately 19° North latitude, you can see 100% of the Northern Hemisphere stars and a staggering 80% of the Southern Hemisphere.

That means from right here on the island, you can spot celestial wonders like the Southern Cross that are invisible to almost the entire continental U.S.!
Why is it so dark here? The Big Island actually has a strict Dark Sky Ordinance! To protect our world-class observatories on Mauna Kea, we use special low-light amber streetlights and shielded fixtures that point downward. This keeps the light on the road and the sky pitch black for the stars.

Whether you are standing on the slopes of Mauna Kea or just looking up from your backyard in Kona or Hilo, the Milky Way looks so close you could almost touch it.
