Happy Lunar New Year! 🧧 🏮 🧨

The Year of the Fire Horse 🐎 🔥 is here — and we can’t think of a better place to ring it in than right here in Volcano, Hawai‘i, where Kīlauea continues to erupt in spectacular fashion, embodying the fire horse’s spirit of energy and transformation as she builds new land right in front of our eyes.

May this year bring you the courage of the horse and the warmth of the flame. 新年快樂 to our whole community.

Hauʻoli Makahiki Hou means Happy New Year in Hawaiian — a warm greeting filled with joy, renewal, and hope for the year ahead. ✨ 🌿

This season of renewal has us inspired by the ʻōhelo plant (pictured above), which grows strong in lava rock where little else is able to take root. 🌋

At the end of 2024 after years of transforming At the Crater’s Edge into the stunning rainforest retreat that it is today, Chris and Eric announced their plans to retire and began the search for new owners. Two prior guests had such fond memories of their stay that they decided to carry on the spirit of this special place!

Meet Will and Megan, the new owners as of May 2025! They are pictured here hiking Kilauea Iki Trail and as guests in 2023 on the Haiku Garden lanai. They worked closely with Chris and Eric to maintain the exceptional experience that guests have come to associate with At the Crater’s Edge.

Will is Hawai'i born and raised, and is always looking out for new ways to embed the local culture (and snacks!) into your visit. They both love the outdoors and have a deep respect for the beautiful corner of the world that is Volcano and the National Park.

Drop a note in the comments to say “aloha”! 🌺 🌈 🌋 🤙

Meet Dave, the current innkeeper of At the Crater’s Edge! Dave (and his beloved dog Pierre) relocated to Volcano from El Paso, Texas and now spend their days taking long walks in the cool mountain air and making sure your stay is perfect. Upon arrival, his first order of business was perfecting the recipe for the famous banana bread we’re known for!

Dave is only a phone call, text, or knock on the door away during your visit – and if you like dogs, come say hi to Pierre too!
