Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
There is still tons of exploring and sites to see in the park. We spent 4 hours and did not even go down a single hiking trail to get these fantastic pictures. We could have spent days hiking all the open trails that are in the park. Next time.

We are so excited about the park re-opening this Saturday!!!

"One thing that impressed me - last night there was a community meeting in Pahoa and I was there, you can still go grocery shopping. Eerie glow in the sky from the lava fountains, and the event is a generational event, it's something that is impacting the local community heavily. I would not hesitate to come to Hawaii. If you're coming to enjoy the beaches or eating the delicious food, know it's happening in a small, eastern edge of the island.

Laze is being misconstrued. It's the same plume that happened in the Puuoo event, and little attention was paid to it at that time. It impacts the area just in the immediate area of the plume, very localized. It's not going to travel around the island, float to other areas. Not a reason for people to cancel their trips."

ISLAND OF HAWAII VOLCANO UPDATE
May 23, 2018, 4:07 p.m. HST

Hawaii is Open for Business: There is absolutely no reason for visitors planning a trip to the island of Hawaii, or the rest of the state, to change or alter their leisure or business travel plans.

Air Access: All flights into the Hawaii Island are operating normally.

Accommodations and Activities: All accommodations, activities and attractions throughout Hawaii Island are operating normally, with the exception of those in the area affected by the volcanic activity in the Puna District.

Remote Location on the Island of Hawaii’s East Side: None of the Hawaiian Islands are affected by Kilauea volcano except a remote area along the Lower East Rift Zone on the island of Hawaii’s east side, Kilauea Summit and surrounding areas.

Kilauea Summit Activity: Steam and ash outbursts from Halemaumau crater are occurring in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (approximately 40 miles away from the Lower East Rift Zone) and being monitored. This is a natural occurrence as rocks fall into the crater and magma interacts with the groundwater (water table).

Air Quality: Kilauea volcano has been erupting for the past 35 years (since January 1983). Lava has reached the ocean on several occasions.

Vog: Also known as volcanic smog reaches different areas of the island depending on wind direction.

SO2: Sulfur dioxide occurs in concentration near active lava flows. Scientists working near the vents must wear gas masks to protect themselves from the concentrated fumes.

Ash: Generated by steam-induced eruptions as magma drops and interacts with the water table.

Laze: A byproduct of lava-ocean interaction and forms as hot lava boils seawater to dryness. This interaction results in a localized white plume of condensed seawater steam, hydrochloric acid gas, and tiny particles of glass at the coastal entry site(s).

Officials are continuing to monitor air quality.

Sadly the park is closed until further notice.
