We seem to be down to about every 7 days now!
🌋Kīlauea volcano is expected to erupt sometime between Sunday, May 24 and Tuesday, May 26, according to the latest data from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
Here is what your park needs you to know:
✏️Even if Kīlauea is not erupting, protect yourself from tephra. Many areas, including Kilauea Military Camp, Uēkahuna and the Keanakākoʻi/Devastation side of the caldera are covered in small particles of volcanic rock, ash and glassy fragments (tephra).
👀Tephra can irritate your eyes, skin and respiratory system.
🌬️Tephra is easily transported by wind. There are currently strong, gusty tradewinds at the summit that are expected to last the next several days.
🥽What to wear: a hat, eye protection, and a dust mask. Wear long sleeves, long pants and closed toe shoes.
🧤Do not handle tephra without gloves. And be sure to put it back where you found it!
