Madam Pele is awake!!

08/07/2023

Hey All, I am looking for an on- call innkeeper to assist a couple times a month and for a two to three week consecutive period yearly so I can get a little “me” time in and give myself a break away from the property. Ideally, I'd prefer for it to be someone local who lives in Hawaii, but for the longer stays I'm willing to consider folks who live on the mainland who want to come to Hawaii for a few weeks and experience the life/culture/hiking/island and get paid to do it! Staying at the property is mandatory not only due to the licensing requirements for a B&B in Hawaii but also as there are animals. In addition to hosting a bed and breakfast I have a small rescue ranch with sheep/goats/donkey/cats/dogs/chickens/ducks who all need to be fed daily. In total the feeding only takes about an hour a day.

Duties are to greet and check in guests and provide information about the local area between 4-6 PM daily. Breakfast service between 8 & 9 AM daily/make breakfast/deliver to the rooms/clean dishes. Housekeeping of guest rooms, clean/strip/reset and sanitize rooms, washing/folding and ironing of sheet sets. Light grounds maintenance (blowing sidewalks free of leaves, removing cobwebs off doors, windows before check in.)

Pay is negotiable based on experience and/or the number of guests staying during scheduled days on site. If interested please DM me, email [email protected] or call/text at 702-755-6722.

Well, she is done! The new cabin to replace the not so all weather tent. Still rustic, still off grid but definitely will withstand whatever weather Mother Nature brings our way. Locking door, windows for cross breezes, fireplace for warmth for those chilly Volcano evenings. Time to deck her out in cozy linens, lighting and all those amenities that make V.A.R. so special. Reservations open and booking up for the summer already!

If at first you don't succeed, you try again! The glamping tent was great... until it wasn't. We had 30+ days of rain in February this year, not to mention gale force winds that were some of the strongest I have ever been through in Hawaii. The tent just couldn't handle that amount of rain and wind. So, we have hiked up our muck boots and started the build for an off grid cabin built on the deck this week! Stay tuned for more pictures of the progress!!

When you take in as many rescues as we do, you definitely end up with a mixed bag of animals. We were very fortunate to have ended up with Oscar Wilde as one of our rescue kitties. After many years of being a friendly stray, Oscar adopted one of our neighbors ne Christmas Eve. They had him for almost 8 years until they needed to move to the mainland for health reasons. Oscar was a kitty leukemia carrier and placing him in a new home was hard. When they asked if we could take him, of course we said yes. After a month of getting to know us he finally settled in. We were blessed to have had Oscar for almost 5 years before he passed away this past December at the ripe old age of 19 years. He is running with Lucy, Ali'i and all our pets that have passed on over the years at Rainbow Bridge. Until we meet again Oz, run wild and free.

For many years I have been looking for the perfect partner for Sonny. Don't get me wrong, he loves his job in being a guard donkey for his goats. However, I always wanted him to have a friend his size. Due to his gentle nature, my Ferrier has been looking for the right match for him to ensure he doesn't end up bullied by a more aggressive donkey. When he told me he found the perfect match for Sonny, I was ecstatic! There was a catch though, there were two females and THEY had to come together from their previous rescue home. What is a girl to do? I welcomed Sugar and Sala into our menagerie at VAR!! Sugar is a bit of a wild child and trouble maker...Sonny follows her lead. Sala is very reserved and while she loves her sister and Sonny, she is much more comfortable with just Sugar, except when she is causing trouble. They LOVE being petted and spoiled by our guests already...Welcome home girls!

There were a lot of changes that happened to us in 2022. Life seems to move at the speed of light and there wasn't time to slow down and take it all in. A week before our sweet Lucy passed away we had taken in two new rescues, Cashew and Cinnamon. Part in grief over loosing Lucy so soon after they arrived, I never posted about them. A few months later I know that everything happens for a reason and these sweet boys came to VAR at the right time. They are super sweet, love to be petted and just as curious as Lucy was. I see both of them channeling some of the same characteristics that made Lulu so unique and why our guests loved her. I'm happy to say our guests love these guys too and they have helped heal the loss of our OG (original goat) Lucy... Cashew and Cinnamon, welcome to your forever home boys.

Madam Pele sure is busy! A new eruption within a different volcano, Mauna Loa, began around 11:30 PM in Sunday November 27th for the first time in 38 years! The eruption began
in Moku‘āweoweo, the summit caldera of Mauna Loa, inside Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

This means there are currently TWO eruptions on Hawaii Island in TWO different Volcanoes! The infrared view below shows both eruption points within their respective calderas. The large one is Mauna Loa and the significantly smaller one shows Halema’uma’u crater on the Kilauea summit caldera.

As of an hour ago, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) confirms that lava has exited Mauna Loa summit and can be seen in two lobes on the northeast flank and the northern flank. Currently, the lava is not flowing toward populated areas and does not pose a threat to any communities. It is headed towards saddle road which is a main throughfare for Hawaii Island residents and tourists alike to go from one side of the island to the other. It is currently open, but that could change at any time. The Mauna Loa access road off Daniel Inoye highway is currently closed to traffic with police posted to keep looky-loos out.

What does this mean for current and future guests? Right now, nothing. We are in a hurry up and wait and see just like everyone else. What may happen in two hours to two days is uncertain. We will update on any road closures as we know about them, but otherwise it is mostly business as usual here. I am told you can see the glow from the lava advancing down Mauna Loa from inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, but I am going to check that out myself before I confirm more.
The National Weather Service has issued an Ashfall Advisory for all districts of Hawaiʻi Island through today. Trace amounts of ashfall and volcanic gas is expected. People with respiratory illness should remain indoors. If you must go outdoors, use face coverings to prevent inhaling ash particles.

Stay tuned!

Mauna loa eruption update:

At this time there is no imminent danger to any particular area of Big Island, however this can change at a moment's notice.

There are no road closures at this time and no sign's that lava has entered into the Rift Zone on any side of the caldera.

Be prepared to leave at a moment's notice but also know we are following this event as closely as possible and If we do hear of any changes we will help broadcast accordingly.

Be safe and as always Drive with Aloha.

Yesterday was a rough day at V.A.R. Our beloved Lucy passed over to Rainbow Bridge to run with her sisters and friends. We knew the time was coming, but it seemed way too soon. She was loved so much by us and guests alike. This place won't be the same without her, she was the OG of goats. She was always into something, always curious and always her undeniable self. R.I.P sweet girl. You will be missed.
