Davis Ranch Retreat

Davis Ranch Retreat Davis Ranch Retreat The Davis Ranch Retreat is your "home away from home", located in beautiful Central Texas. Take a walk with them....they love people!

Longhorns wander from pasture to pasture, stopping at either the catfish tank (pond) or the bass tank (pond). Or ride around in "the Green Machine"....the quietest of golf carts that lets you tour the ranch, stopping to visit with cows and horses, butterflies and birds, flowers and trees....and an occasional deer, turkey, raccoon, those famous armadillos, even a coyote. You might even see a wild h

og! (You'll be safe...just stay in the Green Machine). Guest accommodations include 3 bedrooms/2 baths in the Main House, as well as a separate "casita", with a small kitchenette and private bathroom. Start your day on the porch with coffee, listening to the birds waking everyone up. Sit outside by the pool, or stay cool in the screened-in porch. Might want to visit nearby Bastrop or Smithville....lots to see there. At night, make some s'mores over the fire ring, and listen to the night sounds....and you'll find that the stars at night ARE big and bright, here in the heart of Texas. Large groups (50-75) may choose to use our barn for family gatherings and parties. We can direct you to professionals who will make your event something to remember. If you have any questions or want to make special arrangements for your stay, please feel free to email us at [email protected].

One of my biggest thrills in sharing DRR with guests is being able to welcome them back here for a second, third, fourth or fifth visit. They often become far more than guests….they become close friends. Such is the case of David and Larue who first came in June of 2021 to check out the Treehouse. Happily for me, they’ve returned many times since, testing out various rooms. This past week, they tried out our newest addition: the Longhorn Lodge. I joined them on the porch for coffee each morning. Here’s David, who sings and hums and whistles to my delight.

And THEN, we spent one day touring some of the nearby Painted Churches. Stunningly beautiful!!!! Enjoy some of our photos.

Working the Longhorns also meant it was time to part with some of them. Knowing they were going to a true rancher who knows and enjoys this special breed of cattle made it easy to say goodbye. What was even better is that John became the other ranch hand ….Billy was tremendously relieved that I wasn’t the one in the working pens with the cattle. John knows what he’s doing (and he can climb the fences faster than I can!). Hopefully his working pens will start out with the proper measurements for Longhorns. It takes special skills to get thru that chute. I couldn’t have selected anyone better to take my Longhorns than John and Delane. .

One of my favorite things to do out here is to “work cattle”, every May and October. With my small herd, it only takes a couple of hours, but fortunately, I had special help. A return guest from New York wanted to try out for a cowgirl position. She became the record keeper, and made sure we administered the correct amount of blackleg meds. She also sprinted after a frisky baby calf escapee that ran us all ragged. Fearless Robin, you proved yourself….you’re hired!!! See you in May. P. S. She’s also the world’s sweetest aunt. Right, Shelby?

I’m a bit worried about Midnight. He’s lost his voice. And when I picked him up this morning to take him out to “greet the morning” as I do everyday, he had tears in his eyes. Or at least it looked like it.

What a story!! Yesterday, I attended the Ribbon Cutting for Bryan’s newest venue: The Kimbell Cultural Events Center. My incredibly talented niece, Cassidy Barton, helped bring this former shell of a historical building back to life along with her business partner - Kristy Petty.

The building originally served first as a grocery store and later it became known as a hub for selling feed supplies snd farm implements. The new owners have been careful to retain as much of the original interior design and feel of this beautiful structure.

The redevelopment plans include converting this wonderful structure in such a way as to contain multiple event spaces, including a rooftop terrace, art gallery exhibition spaces, a great hall, and Black Box Theatre.

I was joined by my Aggie friends Lynn Robinson and Bobby Gutierrez. It’s with pride that I salute Cass and my nephew, Matt Barton….bringing life and love to their home town.

Miss you my sweet little sister. But my love for you will never end.

…And so, today we said goodbye to the most remarkable young man, Tyler Saunders. Just think of things done well: being a son, a brother, an uncle, and a dad. Yes, the best at that! Being a friend, a co-worker, a believer in Jesus, and a husband. Yes, again, the best at that! He was Mr. Fix-It…anything and everything. Telling stories, playing guitar, cooking, hunting, fishing. Yes, the best at all of those things. A hard act to follow, but here’s what we can do:
BE….and DO….what you loved most about the one you lost. I’m pretty sure the world will be a better place if we are a bit more like Tyler.

Well done, young man. Well done!.
