Today, Hawaii celebrates King Kamehameha Day. This holiday honors King Kamehameha I, the monarch who unified the Hawaiian islands to establish the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Here in Wailea, we paid tribute to Kamehameha the Great with a presentation of lei. Flower garlands were draped over a 7-foot-tall bronze sculpture of the warrior king that stands at the entrance of the Grand Wailea Maui, A Waldorf Astoria Resort.

Only five statues of King Kamehameha currently exist. The Grand Wailea statue, created by Native Hawaiian artist Herb Kane, is the only one on Maui.

Maui’s luxury travel scene is evolving beyond the traditional resort escape. Across Wailea and Ka’anapali, high-end hotels are pairing VIP amenities with deeper cultural experiences—from outrigger canoe excursions and traditional luaus to Hawaiian language lessons, local farm tours, and whale encounters rooted in Native Hawaiian tradition. The shift comes as Maui continues recovering from the 2023 Lahaina wildfires and ongoing housing challenges, encouraging travelers to engage more thoughtfully with the island rather than experience it from behind resort walls alone.
