The Pembina Gorge encompasses the largest uninterrupted block of woodlands in North Dakota, and the longest segment of unaltered river valley in the state. The ride through the gorge is on gravel, but worth a look nonetheless.

Big shout out to Deirdre and Hope for hosting out mtg today at the Sanctuary House in Walhalla. We gathered an terrific group of folks from the Rendezvous Region to discuss a recent grant we secured from the Bush Foundation/ND Consensus Council to "assess tourism potential".

Today was a kick off discussion and with this grant as well as matching funds committed by the RRRC from our Pembina County JDA contract for development services (contribution of our time) we have the following goals:

1. Form a tourism planning committee.
2. Assess tourism potential through collecting hundreds of assessment surveys and following community tourism development steps developed by the U of MN Extension Service.
3. Evaluate the inventory assessment and develop a strategy for moving forward.

We are initiating this project in the northern parts of our region with a long-term goal of stretching this to developing a regional tourism and development committee and strategy. We will be hiring Jolene Halldorson to give us a hand on the assessment. Jolene is a former RRRC developer and city coordinator for Park River. She is the Pres of the Icelandic Communities Assoc and Shield Maiden extraordinaire! Jolene recently relocated to Langdon and we are eager to have her enthusiastic self back on the RRRC team!

Maggie is also writing a tourism grant this wk to update the Rendezvous Region map and logo development to assist with building a brand for these tourism development efforts.
