On this week’s episode of The Blackberry Podcast, Allan Benton shares that his goal all along was simply to make delicious ham and bacon. He certainly succeeded, and we’re thankful for it! Allan Benton is the celebrated ham producer behind Benton’s Smoky Mountain Country Hams which he grew a small backyard operation into a nationwide favorite, shipping his smoked hams and bacon from Madisonville, Tennessee, to some of the most popular restaurants in the country. Allan is joined by his son, Darrell Benton, who left his career in medicine to return to the family business and continue the Benton legacy. This episode also welcomes our first guest host! Cassidee Dabney, executive chef of The Barn at Blackberry Farm, joins Sarah Chabot to interview the Bentons and share her own origin story with Benton’s ham, which is a staple in the Blackberry kitchens.

This conversation is all about following your passions, believing in your dreams and the delicious results that can come from it. Listen and watch the episode on YouTube now by clicking the link, or find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. bit.ly/TheBlackberryPodcast

There is a deep sense of place woven into every meal at Blackberry Farm. Featured in Travel + Leisure, Executive Chef Cassidee Dabney highlights the enduring beauty of Appalachian heirloom beans, ingredients that reflect the richness of the Great Smoky Mountains and the generations who have cultivated them with intention and pride. From seed-saving efforts led by Master Gardener John Coykendall to Cassidee’s thoughtful approach in the kitchen at The Barn, the article beautifully captures how the culture and flavors of the Smokies continue to shape the plates served at our tables. Creating plant-rich dishes and using ingredients mindfully is part of Cassidee’s support of Relais & Châteaux and Slow Food’s “Plant the Future” initiative. Embracing the versatility of legumes is one of the ways she and John both share their passion for local traditions and encourage sustainability.

A table set with intention. Glasses filled generously. The warmth of familiar conversation lingering over a great meal.

Our Soil to Soul event welcomed Lee Hanson and Riad Nasr, the celebrated chefs of Frechette, Le Rock, Le Veau d’Or and Wild Cherry, to Blackberry Farm for a truly special experience at the table. Each moment was complimented by the expressive and perfectly paired wines of Paul Lato, shared at dinner and explored deeper at his wine seminar, teaching and savoring every note. James Beard Award-winning food writer Brett Martin joined us for a thoughtful conversation that brought our guest chefs out of the kitchen to share their story, and guests were treated to a special sneak peek of an upcoming Blackberry collaboration with Summerill & Bishop, hosted by Seb Bishop himself.

Together with the Blackberry Farm Culinary team, each meal celebrated the connection between land, wine and table. Every detail, from the first pour to the final course, invited guests to slow down and savor Spring in the Great Smoky Mountains.

The most important detail of bringing people together isn’t the food you serve or the way your home looks; it’s simply slowing down and being in community. On our latest episode of The Blackberry Podcast, Shauna Niequist reflects on hospitality that feels warm instead of performative, and why making people feel seen matters more than making everything look flawless. From hosting family and friends to protecting creativity as a writer, Shauna shares an inside look at the philosophies that have shaped her personal life and the expertise she shares in her books.
